Nick: You might want to get a second opinion on that...
Looking at your photos, it appears you might have room to mount an additional avionics rack (for any rack-mounted radio) below your transponder. They are available fairly cheap on eBay. Then you could mount the GDL82 to that and run the cables out the back. No need to create a panel opening.
Or, you could mount it under the pilot's seat, as I did in my DA40:
