Re: Questions about pitting in the camshaft

Another option you might want to consider for a second expert opinion is to sign up for one https://www.savvyaviation.com/savvybasics/ support services. My experience is that they're really knowledgably working through these types of issues and for a few hundred dollars it may be worth it to gain ac...

Re: Delta Hawk DHK180

Delta Hawk announced two new higher horsepower engine models earlier this month, a 200 HP and a 235 HP: https://www.deltahawk.com/2024/02/01/deltahawk-introduces-higher-power-engine-options/ Interesting that their press release claims the new models will share the same dimensions and weight of the D...

Re: Oil filter

I also had a quick drain installed on my 2010 XLS the first oil change after I purchased it back 5 years ago.

Re: Oil filter

I also have been using Tempest oil filters on my DA40 XLS with no issues. Since I change my own oil, a tool that I found particularly helpful (although a bit expensive) is the Tempest oil filter torque wrench. It's preset to the 17 ft pounds specified for the filter and fits perfectly right in front...

Re: Wax On Wax Off

Once a year I use Windex to clean (especially the oil on the fuselage bottom) and Rejex for protection. I find the Rejex coating is slippery enough that bugs come off the leading edge after each flight with just plane water.

With either a dual or single SureFly installation, the two ignition modules are completely independent of each other so if one fails, it should have no impact on the other. My initial impression is that the cost vs benefit of a dual SureFly configuration seems a little questionable. The additional h...

Re: Oil Pan Heater - limit to time of use?

Peter,

Where do you put the the heater in the DA40? Do you just slide it in above the lower cowling by the Power Flow exhaust?

Re: SureFly Electronic Ignition

Dave, Was your mechanic talking about replacing both mechanical mags with SureFly electronic ignitions? SureFly just received FAA approval to replacing both mags with SIMNs (which requires a separate battery backup) a few months ago. I'd be surprised if the dual electronic ignition failure he is ref...

Re: Slick start

Yep, the left and right mags are different part numbers - the left magneto is a SlickStart “retard” magneto (PN: 4347) and the right is a standard SlickStart magneto (PN: 4370). With the standard Slick Start installation, the SlickStart module causes the "retard" magneto to delay its spark...
