Re: Just got my DA40! What should I do??

One consideration on the landing / taxi lights is to compare HID vs. LED. The HIDs are brighter, but the LEDs will use less power and last longer. Having had all three (old, HID, and LED), I would have the HIDs.

Re: Just got my DA40! What should I do??

Thank you both so much. I'm based in Utah, so will definitely be doing some mountain flying soon! For the iPad, do you mount it somewhere, or on knee? What are best GoPro mount locations in your experience? I don't bother to mount the iPad, though others do. The "mini" fits well into the side pocke...

Re: Just got my DA40! What should I do??

Nice plane! I just looked at the sales listing and photos -- and you're right: it isn't a WAAS airplane. That said, so what? :) It will be great for getting into virtually everywhere you will want to go. 1. For cleaning, etc., Tosh is right on the money. Just make sure that the stuff you buy does no...

Re: PIREP on DA40 Supercharged Performance

This is really useful -- thank you. What do you think the EIS contributes to the numbers, if anything?

Re: Filing Direct

Well, I have always chosen Direct for years. However, on my recent trip from Boston to DC; the first controller in Boston said unable and to refile. He then proceeded to ignore the next two calls, and waited until I was in the next controller's airspace and said for me to contact them. Oh, and the ...

Re: Potential new DA 40 owner seeking input...

I'm with Colin on this (and we used to have our DA-40s at the same airport). I, too, did the WAAS upgrade on a past airplane and found it ... non-useful. (I don't want to say useless, because it had usefulness to someone, but not to me, not even for the ADS-B install ... grrr.) In order of usefulnes...

Re: You Know You're a Diamond Pilot When ...

Such a negative thread ... You know you're a Diamond pilot when ... - you write the check for a $2M smooth insurance policy on a DA-40 and it covers more and costs less than your automobile insurance. - flying a stick with full frame avionics is both fun and safe. - everyone who gets into the plane ...

Technology Advances (not G1000-related)

This is a good example of where flight can and should be going: https://www.tum.de/nc/en/about-tum/news/press-releases/details/35556/ They used a pretty straightforward IR/visible light computer vision system to put the airplane down exactly the way it should be. No ground-based systems (other than ...

Re: Engine failure best glide speed descent rate

Great discussion! I think Mark Sampson’s checklist is a good one. I did not mention that one other concern in the back of my mind was the time on my engine. It has just shy of 2900 hrs with no maintenance other than oil changes. It is not making any metal, burns 1 qt of oil every 15-17 hrs and comp...
