Re: I-70 Across Continental Divide
I took a short online mountain orientation course a long time ago. Basically, I think the course was to scare people into playing it super safe. I followed a lot of the advice when I flew across the country in an NA SR22. Fly early if you want someone to find you, fly very early or very late if you ...

Re: Delta Hawk DHK180
That's the $1M (or $100M?) question. Heck, we seem to still be figuring out what all the gotchas are with Austros, which have been around for more than a decade. Chris, Outside of the recent case manufacturing issue; I am trying to think of an issue that Austro has had with the engines that would h...

Re: Delta Hawk DHK180
I do not really understand how it works; but will pass on what I recall from the videos I watched on the turbo/supercharger. But take it with a grain of salt at least. The supercharger is used for starting the engine or inflight restarts. As the turbo speeds up, the turbo pressurizes the chamber aft...

Re: Delta Hawk DHK180
From one of the videos, the Turbo and the Supercharger are actually in parallel so you can lose either one and keep running. The supercharger will only provide 50% power. The counter-rotating was in the press release 15 days ago. So that is fairly recent. In terms of what it takes to make it counter...

Re: Delta Hawk DHK180
Per this PR, DH is developing a counter rotating version. https://www.deltahawk.com/2024/04/10/piper-aircraft-and-deltahawk-engines-to-co-develop-stc-for-pa-44-seminole/ The old FAQ page had some information about CR engines and what they were doing to support them. I do not recall the details, and ...

Re: Delta Hawk DHK180
everyone can work on it/familiarity everywhere Why wouldn't service availability for the Delta Hawk be even less than the Austro? Diamond has rolled out more locations that DeltaHawk has. On the flip side, DH has many fewer parts (no ECU, no valve train, no transmission...) and DH has a much shorte...

Re: Delta Hawk DHK180
The super charger is for starting the engine, inflight restarts, and to provide 50% power in the case of turbo charger failure.
I do not understand how it works, but supposedly once the turbo comes up to speed the parasitic load for super charger is minimal and runs continuously.

Re: Austro engine reliability and safety
Personally I wouldn’t own an Austro, especially on a DA40. The good news is they are exceptionally docile handling aircraft with best in class safety (like a 26G cage for the occupants). Like a few others, the determining factor is proximity to an Austro service center. For me since I am still work...

Re: DA50 vs The World
Cirrus gear is not "bouncy", it is on the stiff side. Diamond and Cessna gear are more forgiving of poor airmanship. Having watched way too many Cessna pilots land with all three wheels or occasionally the front wheel first; you can see how with low wing planes with much greater ground eff...

Re: DA50 vs The World
Alan, Join COPA. You will learn a lot about Cirrus, and you can ask Rick Beach and others about the crash statistics. Beyond access to the forum, COPA has many very informative articles in the regular magazine, they run the CPPTs and many other activities. When it comes time to address problems on a...
