Re: Engine overhaul time - Lycoming IO-360-M1A

Me and a buddy recently purchased a 2008 DA40 with a zero hour engine rebuilt by Penn Yann. Flown it 50 hours in two months with no issues so far. Replaced 2 quarts of mineral oil in that time and now running motor oil. Screens and filters all clean. IIRC, it was $37k but included all new hoses, li...

Re: Checklists and procedure plates

Laminated checklists. SID&STAR on iPad (rarely get SID or STAR). Approach plates on G1000 MFD. ForeFlight on the iPad has let me down a couple of times. On a beautiful VFR day, I got the leg home after a morning flight for breakfast, and IMC was far from my mind. But unexpected and unforecast IM...

Re: Alternatives for Plexus

Timely topic - just tried to add Plexus to an Aircraft Spruce order, but out of stock. I'll give Prist a try.

Re: Tanis engine heater for Lycoming: Love it or not?

Is it common to have power at a tie down? How do you folks pull this off. Besides the solar setup which sounds like a lot. (is it?) I use a small propane-powered generator (https://alpgenerators.com/), which can be stored in a storage box at my tiedown, to power my plane's Tanis preheater. Typicall...

Re: Constant Speed Propeller

I pull the prop back to 2400 at about 400 AGL, leave WOT at least until cruise, often until descent.

Re: Mandatory 10 year AmSafe bottle replacement

Thanks, David, for sharing that link. I had read the report (where by "read" I probably mean focused on the parts that support my position and glossed over others :D). Quite interesting, and certainly a lot to digest. Jumping to the "Findings" at page 87, two points caught my att...

Re: Mandatory 10 year AmSafe bottle replacement

funny the two sides are different, are they not identical? I'd have assumed that they'd be just mirror-image, but never looked closely. Now I'm curious, and will look next time at the plane. They are different part numbers, and I'm a little bit miffed that they seem to value the safety of the copil...

Total cost for the replacement was $1,340, including $544 labor (6.4 hrs @ $85/hr), and $795 for the new belts ($385 pilot side, $410 copilot side).

Re: Mandatory 10 year AmSafe bottle replacement

I’m curious, the airbags are thought to be an important safety feature. Seems a small price to pay to keep them operational. I contacted Amsafe to see about retrofitting into my 2019 da40 NG. Super duper expensive. But if I had a set, I’m pretty sure I’d want to keep them. Why give up the safety? C...

I'll try to dig up that invoice. The cost was definitely cheaper than the AmSafe service, and without the wait. Shop has the old parts/inflators.
