Ottawa to St. John's Newfoundland
I recently made a trip out to St. John's, Newfoundland from my home base on Ottawa (actually I started the day before in Winnipeg). In St. John's I was (mis)fuelled with avgas in my DA40NG, but the FBO was really good about resolving the situation. I'd actually recommend that FBO (PAL Aviation), des...

Re: Misfuelling - Avgas in DA40NG
My favourite photo of the incident: avgas.jpeg The long, slow draining process. They weren't sure they had the needed o-ring to take the valve right off, and the Diamond site was down, so couldn't download the IPC. As a result, they did it the hard way. Took them several hours. tank drain.jpeg

Re: "AHRS Align: Keep Wings Level" message in flight
Thanks guys. Seems like it's not something to worry about further unless it starts happening semi-regularly.

"AHRS Align: Keep Wings Level" message in flight
During the initial phase of a recent approach I had my PFD display a large "AHRS Align: Keep Wings Level". After about 30 seconds, the issue resolved itself. I can find no reference to this error in the Garmin manual, and from what little I can find online, this is an unusual event in flig...

Re: Misfuelling - Avgas in DA40NG
Thanks everyone for the replies. The feedback from Diamond was the same as received here: Drain the tank, flush with some fresh fuel, drain again, fill and then you're and good to go. That process was completed yesterday, and a long ground run was completed with no anomalies. So, all is good to retu...

Re: Misfuelling - Avgas in DA40NG
Thanks Chris! This is a very useful thread; good to know that a simple drain and flush may be all that is needed, and has been done by others with success. That will be the plan for this morning, and then we'll see what Diamond says needs to be additionally done. I'll update this thread with the out...

Misfuelling - Avgas in DA40NG
This evening I landed in St. John's Newfoundland and, upon getting the aircraft (a DA40NG) situated for fuelling, was distracted by a rescue dog I was transporting. Upon returning my attention to the aircraft I discovered that the linesman had just finished off topping the left tank - with avgas! So...

Re: New MSB about to be issued
My DA40 is currently in London Ontario having the pistons replaced as part of its annual. Current engine time is 245 Hrs. Oil sample tested at 3 ppm aluminum. So, below the 8 ppm limit, but that 3 ppm is with only about 50 hours since the last oil change. For reference, the oil change at 195 hours c...

Re: Flying in smoke
It's a point well taken. I was much more concerned about the impact to the aircraft than to my own health. No mask was worn and I definitely felt abnormally fatigued by the end of the second flight. Unfortunately things on the ground in Ottawa were not much better that day, though winds have now shi...

Flying in smoke
Here in Ontario we are blanketed in some pretty thick smoke from wildfires in Quebec. Yesterday I departed my home airport of Ottawa for a roundtrip flight to St. Catherines, about two hours each way. To give you some idea of the density of the smoke, visibilities were about 2 SM when I departed, an...
