Re: Wing Leading Edge Crack

Composite does not age well in the elements. What is your source for this? Examples? And do you mean even when protected by paint, as with on the Diamond planes? I also recall our discovery that Diamond did not take measures to prevent galvanic action in some areas where composite meets other mater...

Re: Wing Leading Edge Crack

I don't know if we are going to be seeing a lot of 40+ year old composite aircraft, as we do with Cessnas, Pipers, etc.

Composite does not age well in the elements.

Re: Future FADEC

Maybe this could get to the bottom of the issue of engine "auto-rough mode:" i.e., why engines always make funny noises when they detect that the plane is flying over large bodies of water. ;) Yes! The worst case of automatic rough I had in a DA40 was when I was over the Bahamas 150 miles off the c...

Re: DA41 ? Let's design it!

This aside, most of the innovation we will see every year (if every previous year remains predictive) goes to functionality, precision, usability, augmenting human sensory capabilities, eliminating human errors, etc. In this regard, the tightly integrated structure of the G1000 is already obsolete....

Re: DA41 ? Let's design it!

One area where we have not had much discussion is unbundling the avionics. I think unbundling is a market-making idea. When I talk to pilots who are footing the full bill for their maintenance and have been flying behind a G1000 or other integrated package for a decade, every one says they would pr...

Re: DA41 ? Let's design it!

So the DA41 is not attempting to be a Cirrus clone - rather a superlative DA40, with a very enticing personality: the pilot's plane, the one you hand fly each time you can, the one that makes you feel that YOU are the plane. This is how I feel at the apex of a lazy 8 , looking down at lake Geneva w...

Re: DA41 ? Let's design it!

Cirrus went from a mass-producer to a manufacturer of premium aircraft for a niche of customers who appear to be price-insensitive. Agreed. The reason for this is that virtually all buyers of NEW Cirrus aircraft qualify for business use (i.e., more than 50% of the hours flown are for business trave...

Re: DA41 ? Let's design it!

"Imagine that we can re-use whatever we want from the DA40 and DA42 to build a SEP aircraft that is targeted at the first time owner pilot - NOT at flight schools. Price point 5% above the SR22 - that's around 450 to 500 K USD. This means the DA41 would not displace the 40. Think SR20 and SR 22." Um...

Re: BasicMed and Diamond

I think you can have a seat belt removed and get a local FSDO to sign it off as a 337'd six seat aircraft. An A&P would be required to re-install the seatbelt -- aka not something that can be done by an owner. My understanding is that the remove-a-seatbelt and 337 thing is something that is not unco...
