Re: Brand New Owner???

... but in speaking with my instructor he said that precision approaches are the only thing that would be missed. Sorry to say but he's talking nonsense. No RNP or GPS (or call it however you want) approach (WAAS or no-WAAS) is considered as precision approach. The only precision approach is ILS (o...

Re: Why 75%?

In addition there’s better prop efficiency in cruise at slightly lower RPM which is in DA42/62 connected to load. E.g. my average TAS at FL160 is 178 kts at 87% (2300 RPM and FF 14.6 GPH), 85% (2250 RPM and FF 14.1 GPH) and 80% (2200 RPM and FF 13.8 GPH) while sweet spot 75% gives 175 kts (2070 RPM ...

Exactly. As a pilot, I consider it (really) nice to have but as an owner, I think of it as investment protection, keeping resale value of the aircrafts.

Re: Need Help - Fuel Gauges only go to 17

That's normal behaviour as CFIDave explained. Fuel gauges are kind of accurate between 25 and 19 gallons and then when they start to show below 17 gallons per side but for both these ranges the accuracy has to be taken with grain of salt. You can rely on fuel totalizer - check it when refueling to c...

Re: Thinking of DA40 after SR22

I hope I'll make few useful comments. I feel that to fly the SR22 safely and proficiently, especially in IMC, I would need about 200 hours a year. Of course, it depends on type of flights (cross country/pattern only, IFR/VFR, IMC, night) but 100 hours should be sufficient to maintain proficiency. In...

Re: DA42 TDI Cold weather operations

I can't say I operate DA42 TDI in particularly cold climate (winter temperatures on the ground go to -5) but I regularly fly it in temperature range down to -30 degrees Celsius (at FL180) without any problem. I'm now on the second set of engines, previously I had Thielert 2.0, now I have CD-155. I r...

Re: Simulated OEI

20% thrust is WAY too high to simulate a feathered engine. I suppose if you can get an examiner to accept that, it'll make passing your multi-engine checkride much easier. :) I've always used 11% on Austro DA42s and DA62s. A disadvantage of this lower power setting is that the gear warning horn wil...

Re: Part 91 condition based maintenance in a DA42NG

One recommendation non-related to the questions you asked: be sure that the aircraft you buy has GFC700 autopilot. The aircraft I sell (sorry, maybe I am conflicted....) has KAP140 which I used on my around-the-world, 3 Atlantic crossings and more, and it does the job! I guess 99.9% of the time you...

Re: Autopilot Checklist

When you say there is no annuciators on DA42, assume you mean top-centre of the G1000 PFD, but it does actually show the FD itself when the AP is turned on. Actually some KAP140 messages are annunciated on G1000 PFD (you'll see them during AP self-test and in flight if you have some AP failure). Th...
