Buried in one of the other threads is an explanation based on what Chris and I found out while at Oshkosh this year:

Re: Rotax TBO

You are absolutely correct -- Chapter 5 in Diamond AMMs is listed as an "Unapproved Chapter" because what the manufacturer recommends there hasn't been reviewed by regulators (unlike Chapter 4 that is mandatory for airworthiness). My understanding is that TBOs are mandatory in Europe, so t...

Re: ADS-B Options for WAAS G1000 with TAS 600

As noted on other threads, the GTX345R *will* work with G1000 GDU 12 software (the last version released for the DA40), but only the GTX345R version with built-in WAAS (for $800 more) and with its own GPS antenna connection. Just for fun I stopped by the Avidyne booth at Oshkosh again this year for ...

Re: G1000 Subscriptions needed

Every 5 years Garmin has to update the G1000's internal database that allows the G1000 to determine magnetic variation based on GPS-derived latitude/longitude. The earth's magnetic north moves enough that isogonic field lines also move. So bundled in with the latest Navigation Data monthly update (r...

Re: Any changes for 2017?

Doug: The only coming change to the DA42-VI I'm aware of is raising the TBO to 2000 hours by the end of 2016 -- promised by Christian Dries, owner of both Diamond and Austro Engines. Since Continental has already raised TBR of its CD-135 diesel to 2100 hours, there's competitive pressure for Austro ...

Re: Main Battery Lasted Over 3.25 after Main Tie Trip

What I was trying to say was that you need to be able to do a run-up without popping circuit breakers before *any* flying. We could get into an interesting separate discussion of how fully charged your battery needs to be to fly a DA40 in IMC. If you have an older battery (e.g. more than 3 years old...

Re: Main Battery Lasted Over 3.25 after Main Tie Trip

An alternative solution to a depleted DA40 battery popping breakers (e.g., after a hot start): Run the engine on the ground at *low* RPM for a few minutes, setting RPM with the throttle just high enough that the alternator output stays below 25 Amps. The alternator won't provide full amperage at low...

Re: DA42 TDI Max Airspeed

I my experience a 2.0L Thielert-powered DA42 (now Continental CD-135) has a top cruise airspeed of approximately 160 knots TAS at non-O2 altitudes of 11-12,000 feet. And to Cary's point about operating DA42 engines past TBR: There is a 2.0L Thielert DA42 with a local flight school based here at KJYO...

Re: My Garmin Experience

One more important change brought on by the latest DA42 software with GDU Version 15: I was surprised that the transponder no longer has a GND (ground) mode. There's no more GND softkey available to select after you first hit the XPDR softkey on the bottom of the PFD. "GND" will never disp...

Re: My Garmin Experience

BTW, one of the reasons I was interested in upgrading our G1000 to GDU Version 15 is to take advantage of the new higher-resolution Terrain database (this is totally independent of the problem with NavData noted above). The previous Garmin Terrain database (still the most current for most G1000 airc...
