Re: Schauer Charger Cooked Batteries

I bought a Schauer initially but then I did some research and determined that it would probably cook the battery. I was able to sell it and bought a Concorde Battery Minder. No issues since then. I use a harness, not the GPU port. There are reasons for this that I have forgotten but it seems to be a...

Re: Fatal UT accident appears to be DA40

I have often noticed that based on visuals I overestimate climb performance. I never trust my eyes, and for terrain rely on TAWS. But I learned that lesson playing with clouds.

Very sad. The pilot made a terrible mistake with the best of intentions.

Re: Do I know what I am getting into / Should I buy a Diamond?

“ You don’t need TAWS in the U.S. as you’ll get traffic through ADSB and the GTX345R.”

Just a small clarification, TAWS is Terrain Awareness and Warning System. I like SVT too but I find TAWS makes for a simple decision interface when you are near terrain.

Re: Do I know what I am getting into / Should I buy a Diamond?

We have a fully equipped 2008 DA40xls, purchased in 2015. In terms of options two things I didn’t think much of at the time of purchase but which I have come to really appreciate are Sirius XM weather and TAWS. I also like having the Avidyne traffic. I don’t have a/c or a Stormscope, and would want ...

Re: Grass operations

I pull a wing back at the tip, have the missus place the board, and then pull it back over. You get leverage if you do one wing at a time. Sort of walk it on.

Re: Grass operations

We have been to KOSH a couple of times. If it’s really wet keep the power up until you park. If you are too timid you may get bogged down and have to use a lot more power. When that happens the prop vortices suck up crap and you can get damage. It happened to me at another field once. Fortunately it...

Re: Tango airways?

The only airways that are used in my province are Tango airways, and I load them all the time on my G1000.

Re: Would you buy a Textron Panthera?

More good news for DA40 owners perhaps - will probably only make our aircraft more desirable.

Re: Canada ADS-B Diversity Requirement

COPA (Canadian OPA, not Cirrus OPA) lobbied on the basis of a number of arguments with the Minister and Nav Canada: functional equivalency, higher Class B (that is the class of airspace above 12,500 in Canada) in Western Canada to permit crossing the mountains; weather info. It’s clear they hit a br...

Re: Canada ADS-B Diversity Requirement

There is very little effort by regulators to accommodate GA in Canada. In much of the country there will be no short-term impact but in the West it will now be impossible to cross the mountains in IFR for aircraft like ours since the minima are typically 13000’. Hopefully a work-around will be found...
