Re: Current IFR rating?
DA40 XLS G1000/WAAS/GFC700 Instrument rated. Did it right after my PPL in 2015 with the encouragement of my type instructor. Best advice I ever got. Safety and knowledge of the ‘system’ is indispensable. I rarely get 6/6/6 without going up with a safety pilot. I will do my checkride ahead of schedul...

Re: Testing the Flap position indicator lights
Not that I know of. One thing I have learned is that the flap indicator lights dim with the dimmer. If you have not returned the dimmer to full intensity after a night time flight then you might (wrongly) think your indicator lights are burnt out.

Re: portable engine heater
Charles, have you ever had an autopilot servo error in cold temps? I had a transient one last year.
Aside from this, I agree, our airplanes run fine in cold weather and the air is dead smooth too.

Re: Oil VS temperature
As I understand it, 15w50 means the oil behaves like a 15 when it is cold, and 50 when it is hot. 100W oil is for hot countries, not 5C. I would definitely change.

Re: Diamond announces an electric DA40
I don’t disagree with much of the factual observation here. As for what the future will bring, I am a strict Berrist (as in Yogi). A deep review of primary energy consumption in the US as reported by the EIA shows the goal of a partially electrified passenger vehicle fleet is one thing, the displace...

Re: Diamond announces an electric DA40
... not to mention the ticking bomb that's carried under the air frame all the time. Maybe Diamond will add a big red handle on the floor to eject the battery pod if it starts to melt down! :D  FUD. It’s actually not FUD. I have a friend building an experimental electric plane. He has to des...

Re: Best products for cleaning the plane
For anyone who is concerned about prior silicone, when I told my (Diamond certified) paint shop guy that I was really careful about no silicone, he said it is not as much of an issue as it was before - that their cleaning solvents remove everything now. So if people are worried about what happened w...

Re: Final approach conundrum (stable versus safe)
There is a good AVWeb video on pattern flying - humorous and also sound advice. Steep approaches and tighter patterns are considered safer by some, and I agree with that approach. For IFR I usually approach 90 knots up to the MDA and transition to landing full landing configuration after that. At 50...

Re: ADS-B FAIL intermittently
Today I had “Traffic Fail” for 10 or 15 minutes on the MFD. Weird thing is that I had ADS-B traffic targets on my iPad when the MFD was reporting the error The error eventually disappeared and I had traffic on both.
Weird. Any thoughts?

Re: LOP - What kind of Fuel Flows do you see?
Since installing Tempest fine wire plugs last year, I fly LOP nearly always. Cylinder 1 is the last to peak for my aircraft and as soon as it has and is running a few degrees LOP I stop. If I go further it gets just a teensy rough and I prefer not to do that. No GAMI. Sample data from today: 6500’, ...
