Re: Yearly Safety Refresher

Actually, my question would be the safest way to ditch a DA40. I do fly over the ocean quite a bit and have played out "what to do" in this scenario in my mind many times before. Do I open canopy to the first locking position before impact? Are not the chances high that the aircraft will f...

Re: Yearly Safety Refresher

I think you have a good idea and will follow this thread. My problem with CFI's on my home field is very basic. They either have no or very few hours in Diamond aircraft. In fact, I spend more time training them about the DA40 and G1000 than time they spend training me. Once I do get a CFI trained t...

Re: Aviation Humor Thread

A true story from my CFI when I was getting my PP license. A student from the flight school was on his cross country solo. He forgot to activate the transponder. He was cruising at 7500msl when ATC asked him to squawk altitude. So he entered 7500, (hijack code) into the box. This was pre 911 so he w...

Re: Hartzell prop overhaul: metal or composite prop?

Wow! I didn't realize I had the very first XL made--40.696. Aluminum prop has served me well with no complaints. Steve, I think yours, use to be mine, was the 2nd XL. At least there was some type of prototype-demo prior to 40.696. Here is a photo of the prototype that factory sent me when they were...

Re: Instructions to Passenger in Event of Pilot Incapacitati

Am I chasing a dream here or can we come up with something that bumps the odds above the zero chance that reflects doing noting? I do think you are chasing a dream. (Only in cheesy Hollywood movie scripts does the novice land the plane) The fact is it does take some training and developing muscle m...

Re: CG on DA40 with 50 gal capacity

Steve -- I lost track of the earlier thread. Are you saying that the larger rudder was added to aid spin recovery in the case of the 50 gal tanks . . . because of the extra mass at the periphery of the spin . . . or?? DAC added the larger rudder to give it more authority at the same time ...

Re: CG on DA40 with 50 gal capacity

Don, My 2006 is not an XL and I do not have active traffic, AM Safe seat belts or power flow exhaust. I believe the XL started with the 2007 model year. But at 6000-8000 ft. I can still manage 135 kt. to 142kt. Don, are you seeing higher speeds with the Powerflow and Hartzell composite prop? My pla...
