Re: G1000 NXi Phase III

I'm rather curious as to the discussion on the DA-40-180 XLT. I hadn't heard that they were even doing NXi upgrades for the DA-40-180s, much less that there would be a Phase 3. Heck, I don't believe we have even an update for the original G1000 past the "0321.23" release from December 2013...

Re: Instruction and Time in Type

I drove by the Wiener-Neustadt airport the other day (was going to a meeting in Graz) and there were a lot of DA-62s on the taxiway. They all looked like they were for the military or something (painted dark gray). Perhaps you should join a service and then you'd get to fly one of these things for n...

Re: Can the G1000 be removed and replaced with something else?

JPI EGT probes (and I'd presume CHT probes) aren't compatible with the G1000, and I'd suspect the opposite is true. A mechanic tried to cheap out on me and replaced a failed Garmin probe with a JPI probe and it didn't work. I brought it to a Diamond shop and they explained that the probes are resis...

Re: Can the G1000 be removed and replaced with something else?

In thinking on this for the last few days, I cannot see why you can't put in any instrumentation you want. The engine is a nice 1941 Lycoming that can be monitored by any monitoring system. The flight instruments are generic. There are no airframe-specific sensors or systems other than the autopilo...

Re: Can the G1000 be removed and replaced with something else?

For years the discussions here all assumed there was no way any of the G1000’s could be replaced sans Diamond participation, but suddenly the landscape has changed. I was pointing out that there was more to the change than one might think at first and likely extra tricky should the situation also c...

Re: Can the G1000 be removed and replaced with something else?

I think we agree more than disagree here. As you mention, I've heard very different stories on MELs and light aircraft. I am sure whatever the reality is that ... well, the rules will be interpreted to press an argument for more, not less. And any defense provided by third-party documentation is wel...

Re: Can the G1000 be removed and replaced with something else?

there is no minimum equipment list. This is explicitly listed in section 2.13 in my copy. But it does not generally reference specific make and model of equipment type. This is not an MEL per se, which is usually built by an operator for a specific airplane. It is a recitation of the JAR 23 require...

Re: Can the G1000 be removed and replaced with something else?

A variety of equipment is described in the AFM, but there is no minimum equipment list. A lot of equipment mentioned in the AFM (e.g. LASAR ignition) isn't relevant. Therefore, it is the usual FAA requirements around lighting, engine instrumentation, airspeed, etc. for VFR and IFR flight. Each provi...

Re: Can the G1000 be removed and replaced with something else?

This conforms with my understanding. Perhaps this is the secret plan that explains why Diamond / Garmin have been so remiss in covering the DA-40-180 / G1000 population: the simple fact is that it can be removed and replaced with something else as with any STC.

Re: Would you buy another DA XX?

Methinks you are on to something here: My DA40 manufactured in November 2011 has the same "the following ... (G1000, etc.) ... is incorporated by STC." I know that the STC ownership moved from Austria to Canada, but I don't think the G1000 ever became part of the type certificate for the D...
