I now have a DA40, so the gear is always "down and locked", but I used to have a Piper Lance with retractable gear. The Lance's gear indicator lights actually plugged into the front of the panel, so if there was ever an issue with a light not coming on, you could exchange the indicator lig...

While trying not to go off topic, I can relate to the issue presented, as I started flying (in 1973) when my family consisted of me and my wife, only, and she was definitely not a fan of small airplanes.
