Re: Annual Cost Average
When I have a shop do the whole thing, their base rate for the annual is typically $1600. When I used to do owner assisted annuals, the IA would charge me maybe $500, as all the panel removal/replacement and standard stuff (plug cleaning, bearing regreasing, oil change, etc.) was done by moi. And wh...

Re: Driver's License Medical
I wouldn't be especially sad to see the Drivers' License medical come along, but going to the doctor once every five years is about the bottom thing on my list of barriers to entry. Ya must be a young dude. It's 24 months for those of us over 40. If the new rule stays limited to VFR, it won't help ...

Re: MT Prop Overhaul
Read my prior posts on this subject and make your own decision. In short: Pay 'em now or pay 'em later. Once the prop exhibits problems, you may not be looking at a simple overhaul anymore.

Re: Battery Issues Anyone?
I believe that the Pilot's Map light is wired that way so that it will function even if the battery relay fails, or the Master Switch (Bat) is turned off (as in the case of an electrical fire). In my aircraft, it and the artificial horizon are the only things powered by the emergency battery pack. ...

Re: Battery Issues Anyone?
Re: The pilot map light. I can't find where the thing is actually required. I never use it myself. How about just popping the bulb out? Or if you're really in a mood, burn the darn thing out, plug it back in, and sleep at night.

Re: #4 low EGT and dips
FWIW I did have an EGT probe fail a couple of years back. But it just flat failed, rather than flake in and out. The connector between the probe and the electronics could also be loose, dirty, flaky, etc.

Re: #4 low EGT and dips
Did CHT's validate the temperature swings or did #4 CHT stay steady during these episodes?

Re: MT Prop Overhaul
3/4" is the correct wrench for the MT (and Hartzell), as the "bolts" are US: 1/2"-20 UNF, dictated by the tapped holes. BUT to get truly anal about it, one would consider tolerances. Remember, it's unlikely anything you have is exactly 3/4" or 19mm For you "watchmakers&...

Re: MT Prop Overhaul
Uh, tough to find a 3/4" crowfoot? I don't think so. I just went and picked one up at Sears and that's what we used when pulling the prop in '09. Tough to find one that has enough clearance to bottom out the crescent on the bolt while attached to my torque wrench. The Sears won't do it, nor th...

Re: MT Prop Overhaul
I installed the newly overhauled prop and governor last Friday, all went flawless except I had to wait to for ordered 19mm crowfoot. After an intensive run up I went flying. The prop is well balanced, a clear improvement. For those pulling and replacing their props - finding a crowfoot adapter for ...
