Re: Just don't say it
I made a mistake once 25 years ago on short approach into Monterey, CA where I remembered that I hadn't sent an email at the office and muttered something to the effect of "dang." It was a perfectly normal landing. After we landed my passenger asked me how close we had come to dying. Ouch....

Re: How Much of an IFR Machine is the DA40?
I fly IFR all the time on the west coast in a DA40; my usual route is between LA, SF, LV, etc. I never fly night IFR over much mountains (except for the ones north of LA, which last for 10 minutes or so). My dispatch rate in winter is usually around 80%, so I keep a couple of Southwest tickets on ro...

Re: PFD and MFD rebooting after engine starts
That's a lot of amperage; my DA40 (with the Lycoming) draws 10-11 amps on average throughout a flight (without pitot tube heat on) regardless of lighting, etc. The battery is presumably being charged at the same time, too. Your new battery should be bench-charged before installation in any case (if ...

Re: ADS-B Install Experience
Nice letter. Definitely send it. I think the issue is that, having worked in the political world, (presumably affluent) private pilots with (expensive) private airplanes flying for pleasure aren't a constituency for the politicians and bureaucrats to care about. (It is unlikely that there are very m...

Re: Converting from a VM-1000 to EDM-900 Engine Monitoring System (EMS)
This is a really great piece. Thank you for writing it. How long did it take (without the factory back and forth) and roughly how much was the investment?

Re: 3D / VR movie of DA-40 flight
It is the v1 of the Samsung Gear 360 fixed to a modified professional mount attached to the tie-down ring. We went through a lot of stress-testing before trying it out on a flight. It is only IPS 53 rated, so no flying through rain!

3D / VR movie of DA-40 flight
A friend and I put a 360° camera on a wing and shot this flight from / to KWHP and around the Fillmore Valley in SoCal. For best results try it from the Youtube app on a mobile device where you can pan and tilt to see the flight from all angles.

Re: G1000 compatible SD cards
I have 16GB SD cards (not the micro) in my G1000 and they work well. There is an issue with the FAT disk format being a required license due to IP issues from Microsoft if the disk / card is > 32GB that is probably what Rich is running into with other devices. Most consumer devices don't bother payi...

Re: DA42-VI vs BRS
Not to step too firmly into a painful topic, but the insurance companies seem to have spoken quite loudly on the issue of "Diamond vs. BRS-equipped airplanes" with much lower premium rates for the Diamonds. While BRS was quite attractive when it came out for experimentals and other aircraf...
