Re: Would you buy another DA XX?

Glad he was the "former head of global support." As I say, I doubt strongly that Diamond will find its software chops.

However, Garmin's G1000 has been a strong product widely used across the industry. When you actually need a replacement part, you will be able to find one.

Re: Would you buy another DA XX?

I hear you, but I believe each is a good product for what it is (flying 1-7 people around). They are not good computers, to be sure, but your car isn't much to speak about for software, either. One has to like the airplane for what it is. The DA-40 is perfect for me as it is today and there aren't r...

Re: A heretical proposition

It makes sense. I think it would work well and would certainly save a few lives.

The only issue that I can see is that GPS is so easily jammed and spoofed. Having autonomous and onboard sensing (e.g. barometric) is better security, but worse convenience and accuracy.

Re: Diamond announces an electric DA40

Generally this is a violent agreement we're having and it requires a number of things to come together. The reason I say I don't expect it my lifetime is simple: I turned 75 yesterday  First off, HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Secondly, I love your posts and, while I sometimes disagree (never personally!),...

Re: Diamond announces an electric DA40

Check this reasonable piece out.

Obviously, Diamond's core strength is in integrating powerplants into reasonably good airframes and not in keeping on the digital side (G1000 ... grrrr ...).

Re: Diamond announces an electric DA40

An electric plane with a two hour flight time would be perfect for my KFHR - KBFI airport runs. And it would sit quietly, happily, on a battery minder when I was away from the island, too. I could see flying that for a long, long time, eventually VFR only. That would suit me, too. LA-SD, LA-SB, NY-...

Maybe Diamond will add a big red handle on the floor to eject the battery pod if it starts to melt down! :D
FUD.

Re: Diamond announces an electric DA40

...90 minutes is kind of scary IMO. I think there's a lot of primary training that stays in the pattern. If a flight school has a fleet of 10 airplanes, and 4 of them are electric trainers that rarely leave the pattern or go beyond a 10-min-away training area, you can probably take care of a lot of...

Re: Final approach conundrum (stable versus safe)

I once did some instruction with a guy who had a glider license, as he was going to add a SEL. There are significant differences between sailplanes and, say a DA40. The dude had some habits and expectations that needed correction. - Sailplanes are typically landed level - not a good idea in a tricy...

Re: Final approach conundrum (stable versus safe)

I agree that flying the fully stabilized approach (which requires some power) "feels" the most professional. But I can't deny that I feel safer when I know my plane has sufficient energy to make the runway even if the engine goes kaput. There is an energy indicator (the "turtle"...
