Re: DA62 wing tank chambers

Great Dave's think alike - the tank capacity is irrelevant because they aren't stacked vertically and are free flowing, ie. the outboard tank will still have some fuel in it when the level passes through the middle tank. The ~17 to ~21 gallon dead zone is due to the distance that level has to travel...

Re: Austro Gearbox Maintenance Cost

The gearbox has changed very little in several years, there are three different versions for the different model aircraft though. They are essentially the same but the 42 has an air cooler glued to the front of it and the 62 has a coolant cooler on the back. The only real change comes from the fact ...

Re: Low Load on Take-off

Curious that their first suspect was the governor when it seems to be making rated RPM? If it wasn't making rated RPM then the max pitch stop could be adjusted. The first thing that caught my eye is that the fuel flow on the left is significantly lower than the right. This could be due to improper r...

Re: Safety wire pliers

Milbar 25W. If you can find a used one with the “tiger wave” jaws which are no longer in production.

The big tool brands just stick their logo on the milbar so you’d be overpaying from them. Snap-on now has their own version but it sucks.

Re: Aviation oil recommendation

I use Aeroshell 15-50 for years and oil analysis is great. It already has the additives in it - no camguard per my research is necessary. I've heard mechanics say both sides of this. I still add camguard. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ The aeroshell multigrade absolutely does contain the Lycoming additive. The straight...

Re: What to do with that old Austro engine

I expect to see a lot of Mercedes powered sand rails at Glamis in the coming years.

Re: Cylinder head cracks

That is interesting about the inter-valve cracks. I have yet to see one on an AE head, though I would have bet A LOT of money that we'd find at least one on a 1.7L head whenever we pulled one off. I've been operating under the assumption that the head is warped, as merely changing the head gasket do...

Re: Oil consumption

Shop told me it may be a pinched breather. the fact that it's happening both sides makes me skeptical. Nothing coming out of the breather vent either. Nacelles are clean. We'll find out in a couple weeks I don't see any common denominator for oil consumption on both engines (besides overfilling obv...

Re: 1,800 Hr Inspection Costs

I’m not sure about secretly - the word is anyone who had an overhaul order in already would be notified they’re getting a new engine at the overhauled price but new orders will have to be new engines only for the time being. I believe they are offering a significant discount though because of that f...
