Re: DA40 Leaning Question
I lean using fuel flow and then verify that I’m truly lean of peak by seeing if, when I enrich the mixture slightly that EGT and CHT goes up. This can only happen LOP. I wish we had vernier mixture controls! Rich is right that peak EGT depends on many factors. In most situations in my plane, I find ...

Re: 100UL and Us
This is a great dev for all GA. The FAA totally screwed up the development of UL. If you recall large companies abandoned the development. The EPA is loosing patience. If it weren’t for GAMI, the EPA will eventually ban 100LL and we would be out of business. Now we have what looks like a superior pr...

Re: More New Owner Questions!
Oil doesn’t really go bad. Oil consumption will depend on rpm. If you are doing a lot of high rpm pattern work it can go up. I get 8-10 hours per qt. I move the plane backward on the ramp by pushing down on tail. Works fine. I carry tow bar at all times in back. Of course, I weigh 200 pounds which h...

Re: Engine Vibration and Exhaust Noise at Low Power Settings
Also, some experts like Mike Busch report that the only time they get clogs in nozzles are after they are cleaned as the fuel system is opened. They advise doing a GAMI lean check before each annual and ONLY clean the nozzle identified as running prematurely lean. If GAMI check is good, then don’t c...

Re: Engine Vibration and Exhaust Noise at Low Power Settings
I don’t know if this will help. I find a lower EGT on cylinder 3, right mag during both run up and inflight mag checks. This is very strange as cyl 3, right mag is the top plug. Typically it is the bottom plugs that run a lower EGT. However, the engine runs very smooth on both mags. At the annual, t...

Re: Engine Vibration and Exhaust Noise at Low Power Settings
If you only have roughness on the right mag and you suspect a bad plug, just look at the egt and cht values. Typically, a fouled plug would show higher EGT and lower CHT. If possible, do a inflight mag check that is LOP for best diagnostic value. Similarly. a plug with high resistance will not fire ...

Advice on troubleshooting electric trim switch
For some time now, the electric trim switch on the pilot's stick doesn't work in my 2002. The electric trim works fine when the autopilot uses it. I'm so used to using the trim wheel that I hardly pay attention but I thought I should get this fixed in the event that I want to sell the plane. Any tho...

Re: Engine Vibration and Exhaust Noise at Low Power Settings
I think what we commonly identify as "engine roughness"results from an uneven production of power across the four cylinders. That is, one cylinder is producing much less power than the others. If you accept this as the fundamental cause of engine roughness, then anything that affects all c...

Re: Compass replacement
Rich- I assume that you replaced your compass with one mounted in the instrument panel. Is that correct?

Compass replacement
The compass mounted on the glare shield of my 2002 is leaking fluid and needs replacement. Any advice? I find the original equipment to be hard to read (not that it is needed much anymore except as required). there appears to be a screw mount for the current compass. Is that a universal mount or do ...
