Re: Question about the backup battery.
Rich: The Emergency battery drives the AI and Pilot's map light only. The Floodlight is the EL panel mounted below the glareshield, which is powered from an inverter on the Essential Bus. The Emergency battery cannot power this (at least on our vintage DA 40s). The Emergency power switch is a DPDT ...

Re: Question about the backup battery.
Wiring diagrams and the POH show the emergency power drives the the AI and floodlight only. These are both a subset of components on the essential bus. The manual says it'd power both for up to 1-1/2 hours. This sounds credible given the mAh rating of the emergency batteries. Even more so if only on...

Re: Question about the backup battery.
Yikes! I forgot you are a battery expert - I should have thought a bit more about how I identified the battery! :bow The one emergency battery pack I cut open simply contained 8 Panasonic CR123A batteries wired in series. Every battery pack I have replaced over the years has measured the same volta...

Re: Question about the backup battery.
Lithium in a battery does not automatically equate to what we refer to as lithium-Ion. Further, not all lithium-based batteries are secondary (rechargeable). There are many different chemistries of lithium-anode batteries. Some are primary and some secondary. I have a Lithium Iron Phosphate in my mo...

Re: Looking for a loaner/rental Propeller
Original MT prop (2002) was modified under warranty in '03 to incorporate a new hub design and some new kind of grease that MT came up with. This was classified as a rebuild. In '09 all hub bearings failed such that the prop needed an overhaul+. Getting it repaired turned into a total debacle docume...

Re: Looking for a loaner/rental Propeller
Next year I'm due for an overhaul of my MT. Probably with a ridiculously low number of hours on it (200-225). Regardless of when I do it, I will likely fly the plane to the shop and let them deal with the R/R, overhaul and balancing. It'll actually save me money, due to the outrageous cost of shippi...

Re: Service & MX
I believe I was charged 2-3 hours to change my ACK E-01 for the E-04 406 MHz. Required connector change, R/R the baggage compartment, various paperwork. That $7K annual in 2007 involved, among other things, R/R both wings, fuel tanks to replace the interconnect hoses. It also involved fabricating an...

Re: Help problems with KAP 140 AP
Here is something simple to try: Pull out the flight computer and re-seat it. You need a 3/32" allen wrench to unlock it. Pull it out, push it back in and re-tighten using the wrench to re-lock it in place. There are diagnostics that can be used to inquire what the computer is seeing, but you n...
