Re: Lead weight in tail fin bulletin
Why would you not compensate with the tail weight? As far as I understand that.is the most weight-economical way to shift the cg backwards (longer arm, less weight needed). My mission are always max 2. people (pilot & copilot) basically, also. If I were foolish enough to put the heavier Hartzel...

Re: Lead weight in tail fin bulletin
You can get an approximate lever arm with a tape measure Screenshot 2024-02-28 at 10.50.54.png : Measure from the root rib to an appropriate point on the fin and add 2194 mm (86.4 in.). It won't be exact but the number for the arm will be large enough that you'll be fairly close. It might even be cl...

Re: Lead weight in tail fin bulletin
What DA40 variant do you have now? Where is the CG and what is the empty weight? Mine is somewhat forward CG and gets marginal with two 90kg dudes up front. With the Hartzell Al prop this would be a big problem. I'd be loathe to correct a problem induced by the extra 16 lb. prop weight by adding eve...

Re: One way to put it
This was just an out-and-back flight of 90 minutes, so no excuse, really. In a hurry? I think they use mogas in this plane and others, refueling from cans stashed somewhere. Maybe an interesting story there. I can see this being more of a pain than filling up at the pump.

Re: I-70 Across Continental Divide
Yes, hedging a bit to the North makes sense. And Vail pass is less challenging. However, calling Rollins Pass a road is being kind. It's one I've driven numerous times. Parts of it are rotting trestles shouldered against the mountain slopes that may no longer be there.

One way to put it
A friend and former instructor of mine now owns/runs a flying club out of Paine Field (KPAE). A few days ago a pilot of their 150 had a "power problem" that caused him to crash into a ravine just short of 16R. No significant injuries but the plane is wrecked. The cause of the power problem...

Re: I-70 Across Continental Divide
To digress a bit on the subject of I-80. If you ever drive that highway across Wyoming, there's a small innocuous sign in the middle of flat, featureless terrain. It depicts the high point as "Continental Divide - 7000 ft.". image.jpeg For like 200 miles you will feel like you have hardly ...

Re: I-70 Across Continental Divide
Clearly Dave dealt with the reality of DA effects to some degree. It looks like he has already been researching a wrinkle about this particular route when approaching from the East. You're not just flying up a nice straight canyon as all the "mountain flying" literature shows. If not alrea...

Re: I-70 Across Continental Divide
BTW, for some additional context: Believe it or not, a Piper Arrow of this vintage is something like 300 lb lighter than most DA40’s
