Re: Quick Tip: Pop-up IFR Clearance
I've always been granted a clearance in the air quickly by both Oakland Center and Norcal Approach. In So Cal not so much, they've told me to file with FS and call back in 10 to pick it up. I've only done it for approaches, but both Oakland Center and Norcal both have cleared me to the IAF right aw...

Re: Quick Tip: Pop-up IFR Clearance
Colin, I agree... not just the quiet TRACONs like Santa Barbara and Bakersfield, but even SoCal in the LA Basin is good about pop-up clearances... especially if they're already on file. And I've had pretty much 100% success with the Center controllers... LA, Oakland, Albuquerque, Seattle, etc.

Quick Tip: Pop-up IFR Clearance
We took off this morning into clear skies… but we all know that stuff happens. Let’s explore a few ways we can request – and receive – a pop-up IFR clearance. Welcome aboard! Wayne, GeezerGeek Pilot

Re: A plug for FlashPass - eAPIS
Totally agree... FlashPass (both .net and app) is solid... and Arturo's personal support is, as Russ notes, awesome. Highly recommend. I've used it for crossings into/out-of Canada, Mexico, Cuba, the Bahamas, and parts of the Caribbean.

Re: ForeFlight DA40NG performance profile - descent
Steve,
The ForeFlight DA40-180 performance profile also makes the same error, giving KTAS between TOD and destination to be ~72 KTAS (see Flights tab, Navlog). Do you want to take the lead and email team@foreflight.com?

Shy of a full hands-on testing of the two fine products, this might give you a taste (also 4 add'l parts to this video series):

Re: Flying from the Mid-Atlantic to the PNW, California, and back again
It would seem the performance of the oxygen concentrator, especially with the dual cannula, rapidly drops off above 10k feet (or perhaps a bit higher, since it's density altitude that matters here). I suspect the DA at 12.5 was likely 14k or more, so perhaps we were slightly above the limit for the...

Re: Corked Nose Wheel
As a data point, I flew my DA40-180 for 3 years with 50% more tension... It helped, but didn't solve the problem. The fin solved it totally.

Re: Indicated, True or GS?
Russ, my understanding is that any speeds requested by ATC are Indicated (they correct for altitude, winds, etc).

P.S. In my simple head this is symmetric to when they say "fly heading 120" they mean Heading (and not Course) and they correct for winds as needed.

/boatguy... Russ, my rule of thumb is to only pre-book lodging for 2-night or longer stays (i.e. the most interesting) and expect to now and again forfeit the first night. For 1-nighters (in transit) play it by ear.
