Re: Diesel vs Lycoming
In reading the report, it appears that Thielert in-flight shutdowns from ALL causes are roughly the same as for avgas engines, i.e., about 10 shutdowns per 100,000 hours of flying.

Re: Aux input volume
Plugging in the charging cable might cause electrical noise (e.g., due to creating a ground loop), but I don't see how that could change the volume level. A shielded cable isn't likely to make much difference if this is causing a ground loop. (BTW, this same issue exists with in many cars if you pla...

Re: Burning Excessive Oil
As you may know, in a DA40 if you fill the engine above 6 quarts, any amount over 6 will soon be blown out leaving a mess all over the plane's belly. It's normal for the oil to settle to about 5.5-6 quarts after an oil change. I'd consider 2 things: 1. Was the oil actually burned or leaking past the...

Re: What comes after a DA40?
You do not need a "High Altitude" endorsement, even if your plane is pressurized -- as long as you stay at 25000 feet or below.Antoine wrote:Dave: since the Extra's certified ceiling is FL250, it would seem I don't need anything else than my CPL, right?

Re: What comes after a DA40?
I believe you still need a "high altitude" endorsement and training if you intend to fly above 25,000 feet.

Re: Market prices/availability of DA40-180
DA40 price ranges are quite broad depending on number of airframe hours, engine hours SMOH, damage history, whether aircraft have been hangared, used by a flight school, installation of options (e.g., ADS-B, WAAS upgrades, TAS600 active traffic, SVT, Powerflow, extended range fuel tanks, speed gear,...

Re: Market prices/availability of DA40-180
As someone who works for a Diamond distributor and broker selling new and used DA40s (full disclosure, LifeStyle Aviation), I can tell you that we've recently observed major changes in the market: Used DA40s Good used DA40s are now selling in a matter of days. Some planes are sold before they're eve...

Re: New LED Lights
I've never heard of a $100 "Airplane Dollar" before.
The usual term is an AMU (Aircraft Maintenance Unit) = $1000 USD.
So the LED bracket is only 1/10 of an AMU: What a bargain!

Re: Adding WAAS?
I think the answer really depends on how you intend to use the airplane. If you need to fly in IMC to meet time/date commitments for when you have to be somewhere (subject to the usual go/no-go safety considerations), then you're going to want WAAS. Not only can you fly to lower minimums, but use of...

Re: Non-WAAS G1000 -- ADS-B Future
Bottom line is that I want the cheapest solution available and am still going to wait and hope that a lot of pilots start complaining to congress and AOPA so we can get a cheaper solution. The problem is that we aren't able to take advantage of ANY ADS-B unit that's not integrated with the G1000 (u...
