Tecnam 2010 ?

Another four seater with IO-360...

Can someone explain where this plane fits in the market and why one should buy it instead of a DA40?

It's a little cheaper, carries 100lbs more and is a high wing.

On the other hand, you are the test pilot for a little while, and test owner, and the autopilot is not as good.

Certainly a nice used DA40 is a LOT better deal than the Tecnam.

Fair enough - 100 lbs more useful load is significant (also: I think the GFC700 is available btw).
And maybe some people need/like high wings.
I checked the data sheet. speed is 133 KTAS at 6500 ft and 75%.
75% is 10.5 GPH or so. A DA40 would/should do 150 with this fuel burn at 6500 ft.
So this "new" bird is not 10 but a whopping 17 knots slower than a DA40.

Also took a look at the interior, wings, flaps, fairings (yikes - look at the nose wheel)...
This is the exact opposite of a Pipistrel Panthera.

The Tecnam 2010 I also don't understand. :scratch:

OTOH, if the Flight Design C4 comes anywhere close to its projected specs, that would be quite interesting:
  • 600 kg (1300 lb) useful, 160 KTAS max cruise, $250k. :thumbsup:
  • Wrong IO-360, though. :thumbsd:
However, AFAIK the prototype hasn't flown. And Flight Design's timeline was last updated one year ago.

The C4 specs look nice. It'll be interesting to see how it finally turns out. It appears that the initial flight happened just a couple of weeks ago.

I don't think there is an answer to your question.
It's good to see new designs coming to market.
I checked GAMA 2014 stats. TECNAM comes Nr 4 after Diamond for Piston engine aircrafts:
Cirrus 308 sold
Cessna 220 sold (among which 155 C172's) go figure
Diamond 202 sold (136 DA40's, many Austro Tundra's sold to East Europe)
Tecnam sold 190 aircrafts
Flight Design sold 88 aircrafts.

Maybe Tecnam 2010 has a nice NLG design, go wonder ;)

I would much rather have my DA40 but I can see the appeal, especially to the C172/C182 generation that prefers this design. The additional payload is, in reality, another passenger, probably without the CG issues many of us deal with. Looks to be a little roomier as well. Then there is the T/O and landing performance and price. If I had to guess, it might be that new pilots who grew up in the back seat of their father's C182 might look at this aircraft. There are a lot of people in that category in my area of the country.

I just returned from a visit to Sun 'n Fun where the Diamond exhibition stand was close to the Tecnam stand. When I was there guess who appeared to me to have more traffic? Tecnam. They has something new to show. People came to look at the P2010 and also saw the Astore (also new), P2008 and P2006T (twin). The Diamond stand had a DA20, DA40-XLT and DA42-VI. Traffic appeared to me to be light with most interest in the DA42-VI. I am sure when David returns he will have a better perspective as he was working the Diamond stand during the show. I would not be surprised if Tecnam and Flight Design are moderately successful with their offerings, they are new and both in their own way bring a new twist of innovation to legacy products in the market from other vendors. Tecnam and Flight Design both appear to be investing in a market, that is AVGAS / Auto Fuel piston engine 4 seat aircraft in the USA, that Diamond for the moment is choosing to ignore. The attendance at this year's Sun N Fun seemed to be up compared to last year (my DA42-VI was on static display at the Diamond exhibit both last year and this year). Even better, more visitors to the Diamond booth actually seemed interested in buying new or used Diamonds. I couldn't really get a sense of how well-attended the Tecnam exhibit was since I wasn't able to swing by there very often.

I think the Tecnam will find a ready market for the high-wing "172 crowd" who wants something that looks like it was actually built this century. It's got a great Lycoming engine.
