Traverse City is a popular summer resort town in Northwest Michigan. It is located on the southern end of Grand Traverse Bay of Lake Michigan. http://www.visittraversecity.com/ It is the gateway to the Leelanau peninsula which is a beautiful area in the summer and fall. http://www.leelanau.net/
KTVC is a very good Class D airport with 2 runways. http://www.airnav.com/airport/KTVC Harbor Air FBO has always been helpful and we have never had a problem getting a rental car on short notice unless there is a local event like the Cherry Festival (early July). http://www.hastvc.com/ A comprehensive maintenance shop Cherry Capitol Aviation is located near the FBO.

There are many recreational activities in the area. Sleeping Dunes National Lakeshore is less than an hour drive. http://www.nps.gov/slbe/index.htm There are hiking trails including the dune climb followed by about a 2 mile hike to Lake Michigan. It is more strenuous than the distance suggests due to the hills and sand, carry some water.
Manitou Island can be reached by a ferry from Leland. http://www.nps.gov/slbe/planyourvisit/s ... island.htm
Glen Arbor is a small town near the dunes with many places to stay. http://www.visitglenarbor.com/index.asp
Crystal River outfitters rents canoes for a beautiful 2 to 3 hour trip on a pristine creek. http://www.crystalriveroutfitters.com/ Be prepared to get wet and there are several short portages over roads.
Other towns in the area worth checking out are Sutton's Bay and Leland. Fishing charters for lake trout are available from Leland and probably several other towns as well. Several vineyards are located in the Leelanau peninsula and at least one has a tasting room.
In summary, a great place to visit in the summer and early fall.
