KIAD, Dulles International, Virginia

Post by AV8NC »

I wondered if anyone has experience flying into IAD, or has a friend who has done it. My reading on the 'net indicates a ramp/landing fee of $38 that is mandated by the airport but no FBO fee for small piston aircraft. Honestly, $38 wouldn't be that bad for the thrill of landing at IAD and spending a day in DC. But are there other hidden costs or "gotchas" that I might find?

Never landed under my own steam at IAD (nearest was Manassas, then rented a car collecting Virginia Aviation Ambassador passport stamps). The receptionist at one of the FBOs at IAD (Landmark?) said small planes land there all the time, no big deal. You could consider taxiing over to the outstanding air museum on the field. That plus keep your speed up on final (just like RDU).

I flew into IAD last year to pick up my grandmother, I remember about 40 bucks for the landing fee and 30 bucks for the handling fee which was waived if you purchased at least 10 gals of very over priced gas.
BWI was about 30 bucks for the landing fee and handling fee was fifteen.
I am based out of GAI, about 20 miles away by plane but 40 miles by car. :-)
Feel free to send me PM if you have any questions about getting into the DC area.

Went to KIAD last weekend.
$38 fee at Landmark Aviation. They shuttled us over to the new Air & Space Museum & back when done.
You must visit the museum. Really amazing.
No security pin required for KIAD.

Ronnie,

Would you tell us about the experience landing at KIAD? I'm wondering if you were IFR or VFR and how they worked you in among all the commercial traffic.

Weather conditions were VFR.
I filed IFR as always going into the DC ADIZ, I prefer ATC have responsibility for where I'm flying in there.
They vectored me to the right downwind for 01 Center & visual right base to final.
Departure was Capitol 8 departure procedure to filed flight plan.
Very nice controllers & FBO.

I flew into IAD and just posted the experience to the East Coast trip thread. I was surprised at how reasonable it was. As far as I could tell, we were the only propeller plane on the field both on the day we landed and when we took off.
