Eric - Thanks. I really enjoy watching your videos. The low level footage really gives a sense of speed.

Wow Eric, that looks really fast -- how high were you above the water?

Re: Flying Videos

I picked up a GoPro Hero 3+ on eBay to document some of my flying.

I've mounted it several places (left and right windows and above my head on the canopy) using a Ram suction mount, standard length double ball socket and the GoPro ball mount attached to "the frame". I keep getting a shimmering effect (technically I think it's called jello) in the videos. (Not looking for an explanation of rolling shutter and CMOS cameras etc..)

Perhaps I am clamping down too tight and the rubber balls aren't able to dampen the vibration, perhaps I should use the shorter double length ball socket, or....?

I've seen some YouTube side by side videos comparing the videos shot using GoPro and Ram mounts and both seem acceptable (with a slight edge to Ram?).

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Tim

Mount your GoPro clear case directly to your suction cup and clamp down hard. The ball socket is your problem.

If that's not an option on the ram mount, try GoPro's suction cup, single bolt connection between the two.

This set up even films smoothly on the outside of the cockpit, or so I hear.

I've been struggling also with where to mount my new GoPro ... I was concerned about damaging the windows so have avoided the suction cups. But it may be the right answer afterall.

A friend told me he added a rod clothes hanger and mounted it there ... but cant' find one that fits

I took Eric's advice and used the GoPro suction mount without the extension arm and the video's came out great. I mount it on the inside of the canopy and use the inverted image mode on the GoPro.

I did the same on my DA42. I wish I was better at editing the movies. While the flights seem to go very fast, reviewing them as a movie seems to show LOTS of boring time that I just didn't remember while flying :)
