Ok, plan B.

I also got a RAM Motorcycle Handlebar Clamp Base with M8 Screws - http://www.rammount.com/CatalogResults/ ... fault.aspx

With the proper length M8 bolt and/or spacers this ball mount fits nicely where the tie-down eyes screw in at the tip of the wings. I just unscrew the eye and screw in the ball. You use the same RAM arm and GoPro adapter. I'll post a video from that mount point.

PS I checked and I got the 3" clamp base - http://www.rammount.com/CatalogResults/ ... fault.aspx

Interesting setup! I would have guessed it would prove too unstable resulting in shaky videos, but after watching your videos, your setup seems very smooth. Bummed I never tried the clamp mounts on my DA40. Too late for me, flying a DA42 now. Maybe I can clamp onto the pitot tube! :D

I had tried drilling a mount into the inspection plates out under the wings, but was way to bouncy.

Anyway, great job!
Eric

Eric: for your DA42 try clamping to the foot steps aft of the wing. They're much longer than those of the DA40, and a camera facing forward may be able to get some shots of the gear retracting.

Here is one angle from the wingtip using the previously mentioned ball mount. We used this to diagnose a badly out of balance tire on the copilot side. Note how it wobbles back and forth just after liftoff. This mount point also gives great views in 360 degrees and straight down.

Now that might be fun...thanks for the suggestion Dave. It had occurred to me that I might be able to figure out something for the handle holds up above too, but the foot step is a no brainer with Mark's setup.

The issue I run into going out on the wing with a camera is that I have this "thing" for making most of my videos around 20x speed. Anytime I mount off the center (longitudinal axis) the video starts to appear shaky in even light turbulence. By the time you move all the way out to the edge of the wing the footage often becomes worthless for high speed playback. You can come up with some cool shots in realtime though.

Thanks for the mount info Mark!

Another quick video from above. This is the north west shore of Canandaigua Lake NY. I'm continuing to learn and refine my video technique.

Jean,
Would you mind sharing a picture and any specifics about your camera mount on the horizontal stabilizer?

Thanks

Mark,
I use a Drift flat adhesive mount. It is very strong. I tether it with a kite rope in case.

Hi Jean -

I have no personal experience, but wonder if there is risk of aircraft damage with a camera dangling from a safety line in the slipstream. Or worse, interference with the stabilizer trim or rudder.

Is this something that you have considered?

Chris
