Tangier Island VA (TGI) is a nice stop and there are a couple of restaurants within walking distance. Lorraine's and Crocketts are the two I remember. Crocketts offers a sit down, family style dinner.
Williamsburg VA (JGG) has a great restaurant for lunch fare at the FBO. You can either cab or rent a car and travel back into time into colonial Williamsburg historic area. If you are renting a car, you can get to Jamestown and Yorktown for even more history. Busch Gardens is there too and outlet malls for those inclined. Lots of places to stay, but try Colonial Gardens, a BnB 5 min from the airport owned by a DA40 driver.
If you are going to "Mecca" at Kittyhawk NC, then a stop in Manteo (Dare County Regional, MQI) is just 8 nm away. You can get the airport "beater" car and drive into the downtown area for shops and restaurants.
A bit further south down the outer banks barrier island is Ocracoke Island NC (W95). You can walk from the airport to the beach in 5 min, or go to Howards pub in 10 min. It's worth a weekend getaway in the summer and has all kinds of open air restaurants with live music. Hotels will pick you up from the airport and most people walk or rent bikes. There are no "chain" hotels, it's mostly mom and pop style.
