Crossing the Continent 2013

Loss of the alternator over Albany, NY, but in general a very successful chip (the return trip was crossing number sixteen).

I admit that the night flight into Denver (high altitude, high hostile terrain, IMC nearby, unfriendly controllers) made me wish that I had a Twinstar.

Great write up! What great pictures. I fly out of KAPA, and we did have a big storm that night. Glad you got in and out ok. Sorry the FAA folks were abrupt.

Nice write-up. We only crossed the continent once in our DA40, but it was an incredibly memorable trip -- you must have lots of great flying stories from having done this so many times.

How do you manage to fit a family of 4 (not with small kids) and luggage into a DA40 without flying overweight? How much fuel do you typically carry?

Hey Colin,
I've spent the past 30 min looking at your blog. I bought my DA40 for the express purpose of flying around the country during my 50th year. That year starts October 28th. I plan on taking 3-4 weeks getting to know, most, if not all of the states from the air. I've done a lot of local flying getting to know the airplane. We are in Panama City, FL this week after our first long flight from Bowling Green, KY. I wanted to tell you that I am inspired by your trips. I will be a regular visitor at your blog site. If you ever decide to travel to KY, a state you have yet to enter, please come visit. You can be our guests. And we know some great places to eat. Thanks for sharing your exploits. Given the nature of this topic I thought that I, too, would offer up our flying adventure story. My wife and I returned from a trip to Alaska in our DA42 this July. This trip had been on my bucket list for many years (nearly 20), and we finally did it this year. The story actually begins at home in Indianapolis, where we started the adventure. We flew form Indy on to Minneapolis to stay with our son (and family). Then on to Billings the next day, and then to Olympia WA the third day. After resting in Olympia on Saturday and Sunday, our flight began and it is listed as Day 1 in my "blog". I wrote the daily blog every evening after we stopped. It represents how I really felt at the time and not what I thought days or weeks later, so my feelings and emotions may come through. Also, it was written as daily e-mails to my friends and family, so some of it may be a little obscure. If anyone wants, I can send the URL for the photos and videos we took. They are also pretty raw and virtually unedited. Enjoy.

Cary did all sorts of flying to get to Alaska that I wouldn't be comfortable doing. I don't know how people survive up there in little planes.

Doug, I will definitely give you a shout if I make it into Kentucky. And I hope you'll post about your longer trips and give a shout if you are making it into Southern California.

While Colin noted that some of the flying I did in Alaska he would not be comfortable doing, as my blog showed neither was I. Any one of the events I encountered alone would not really be a problem, loose formation flying, canyon flying, low ceilings, rain, hail, TRW, smoke, and turbulence all occurring at the same time is what really made things uncomfortable.
