SF Bay at sunset
We are probably in a drought, but the weather is absolutely spectacular. CAVU with mild temps (~21C), and enough wind to clear the air. So my son & I decided to take a joy ride today and enjoy the view.
ATC was great, as usual. One exciting bit was having a 777 take-off directly under us as we passed off the west end of SFO's 28R at only 3500'. Thankfully NorCal alerted us that he was altitude constrained, or we would have gotten a very close look.
Here are some pics from a delightful evening.

Nice pictures! I did the 'Bay Tour" many times in the mid-80s when I ws stationed at Moffett. I need to dig out those slides (yes, slides - no digital cameras back then...).

This was taken on our way up the Peninsula, and should be quite familiar!Steve wrote:I did the "Bay Tour" many times in the mid-80s when I was stationed at Moffett.
Unfortunately Hangar One is currently only a skeleton.

Very familiar indeed. My squadron was based in the north end of Hangar 2, the closest of the green-roofed hangars in your photo. Those buildings are actually made of Redwood (steel was in short supply during WWII). They are HUGE! Fond memories...

Talk about fond memories. I grew up in Mountain View in the 50's and 60's and visited those hangars many times. For the life of me, I can't figure out why I have lived in the upper Midwest for the last 40 years

Because that 1500sf home built in the 50s costs a million now!carym wrote:Talk about fond memories. I grew up in Mountain View in the 50's and 60's and visited those hangars many times. For the life of me, I can't figure out why I have lived in the upper Midwest for the last 40 years
I grew up right next door in Los Altos, late 60s and 70s. Great memories, but didn't recognize the place when I went back in the 90s. Used to go watch RC planes in the fields and fields of orchards, which are now Silicon Valley. My Dad's work must have been one of the first buildings, you could see it way off in the distance, across all the farmland, from hwy 101.
The aviation seed was planted in me at Palo Alto Airport, my best friends' parents were both pilots and took me with them on many many flights. Sad it took me half a lifetime to finally go get my PP.
Beautiful pics! This flight has been bumped way up on my bucket list now!
