Invitation to McCall Fly-in & Open House

Post by rwtucker »

DAN members nearby or interesting in traveling to the northwest August 1st & 2nd are invited to the KMYL Fly-in and Open House.

Admission is free and pilots and their families can camp overnight at the airport. We'll take good care of you.

The event features hot air balloons, seminars, food vendors, and raffles. Special youth activities include free airplane rides for ages 8-17, an aviation-themed chalk art contest, how to pre-flight a real airplane, and how to make and fly a tumblewing. Seminars include presentations on mountain flying (Lori MacNichol, http://www.mountaincanyonflying.com) understanding turns (The Spin-master, Rich Stowell, http://www.richstowell.com), owner-approved maintenance, and Next Generation Air Traffic Control (NavWorx, http://www.navworx.com; FreeFlightSystems, http://www.freeflightsystems.com). Idaho Power and the U.S. Forest Service will discuss their current and future uses of drones. An Idaho Power drone will be on display. Raffles will offer chances for an aerobatic ride with Rich Stowell.

Those interested in aviation nostalgia will want to be present for the live auction of the McCall airport’s recently retired rotating beacon.

Most of the activities occur throughout the day on Saturday, capped off with a happy hour, dinner, and live music. A traditional fly-in breakfast is planned on Sunday morning for $10 per person by the Idaho Aviation Association (always a great breakfast).

I hope to see you there! Let me know if you will be coming. I will be happy to help out with logistics and will plan something special for you.

For up to date information, see: http://www.McCallAirportEvents.weebly.com

P.S. The McCall runway is 6,000+ feet of new asphalt with memorably scenic north and south approaches. In addition to the great summer recreation in McCall (boating, hiking, fishing, camping; http://www.mccall.id.us/), you are a short hop from Sun Valley to the east and picturesque Joseph City (http://josephoregon.com/) which offers a scenic flight over Hell's Canyon dam.

That would be fantastic Brock! Your aircraft will be a center of attention and it would be nice to have another Diamond in this forest of C210, Supercubs, etc. We're going to have a good time. Plus, I have Moffitt from NavWorx and Campbell from FreeFlightSystems coming in to talk ADS-B.

If you are inclined, a slight diversion north rather than south of the Wallowa's takes you over Joseph City (if you have time, a fantastic place to have a meal and visit the foundry) and direct to KMYL over the most majestic portion of Hell's Canyon. As you know, your route could change if fire season materializes. If so, tankers, etc. will be major traffic in/out of KMYL and a temporary tower will bring you in.

Let me know your ETA and I'll tee up the announcer to point out that a Supercharged Diamond is on final (nothing like pressure for a good landing :D ). I'll PM my mobile number.

If for some reason you can't make Saturday, drop in Sunday for the IAA Breakfast. I'll buy.
