Baja 500

Post by h20wrks »

A fiend of mine works with a pit crew for several of the Trophy trucks racing in the Baja 500. He convinced me to fly to the race to provide air support for the trucks during the race. We will be flying our DA40 from KILM to Scottsdale to meet with the teams, then down to Ensenada Mexico for the race. We added a 2 meter radio to Com 3, for race communications and I am working thru Lexan air scoops for the canopy. I will post pictures of them once I complete the design. While we are out west we are planning on the plane museum in Tuscon and to fly the Grand Canyon, any other suggestions for must see in this part of the country?

KSEZ (Sedona, AZ) should be on every pilot's bucket list.

Hi Jimmy -

Sounds like fun!

The Grand Canyon is spectacular. Weather permitting, the lowest level corridors are *much* better than the higher levels.

Depending on your route, other personal highlights in the general area include Lake Powell (huge!), meteor crater near Winslow, and Monument Valley. As you probably know, thunderstorms are common most afternoons, so the best flying is usually very early in the morning.

When will you be arriving in SDL? I am flying there with my family from Vegas 5/28-5/30. Let me know if you need any specific info for the area, I fly there often.

Be careful out there. There should be lots of helicopters following trucks and the entire country is pretty much uncontrolled. I love Baja. Have fun.

Don't forget that you have to clear Mexican customs outbound. I skipped that once or twice. Luckily no one seems to notice but I figure my name is posted on a board somewhere.

We will probably leave KILM next Friday, we have to be in KSDL to meet with the team on Tuesday.
