Re: iPad in DA40
Photos of different applications would definitely help this thread. If anyone has some interesting (workable) options for the iPad I know all of us would love to see them. My other thought is that the proposed new (smaller) iPad might be better for our particular planes if/when it is introduced.

Re: iPad in DA40
Just received my iPad mini. Definitely a better fit for the DA40 - certainly compared to the 1st-gen iPad. Smaller and far lighter. It's a perfect size for plate display.
Got the 32 GB with no WiFi and no GPS. Also picked up the Garmin GLO GPS receiver. This GPS requires no special software to connect to IOS. Recognized, paired and connected right up and is usable with all GPS-aware apps.
RAM mount designed for the mini ships next month.
I haven't yet used it in the plane, been too tied up with other stuff to even go flying (retirement is time-consuming).

Re: iPad in DA40
Unboxed and flew with the iPad mini this weekend in the '40. First impressions:
http://blog.foreflight.com/2012/11/03/f ... pressions/
Until the mini came along, I flew with the iPad 2 (prefer that over the warm running iPad 3) and use the iProAviator kneeboard primarily because it has a hard flip cover with a clip attached to it. Pic attached. I am excited by the mini's smaller size - as mentioned in the post above, it presents more flexibility as to where it can be mounted.
This week I'll test fly the Ram dash mount and 7" tablet cradle center mounted above the backup instruments. Link: http://www.sportys.com/PilotShop/product/16676
I also purchased a new dual USB charger today, which puts out 2.1 amps to each port. I fly with the iPad and iPhone powered at all times, and the dual 2.1 amp charger will both power and charge each. Link: http://store.apple.com/us/product/H8979ZM/A

Re: iPad in DA40
Some shots of the iPad mini in the '40 with the 7" tablet cradle. I tried both the suction mount and the dash mount. Both are interesting, but I'm leaning towards the suction mount. If mounting on the left side via suction mount, I suggest getting the RAM arm / connector with the shortest run. You can see the dash mount ball in the first photograph (mini is on the left, dash mount clamp is center).
The 7" cradle isn't 100% ipad friendly in that the mini's on off switch is far enough right on the device that it is barely exposed through the opening in the plastic part that secures the top of the mini. I'm going to take a dremel to mine and open the window up a bit more.
I can't recommend the USB charger previously linked to. It caused interference with the com radios when both ports were in use.

Yep. Got to make a hole in the plastic for power button:SlowFlight wrote: The 7" cradle isn't 100% ipad friendly in that the mini's on off switch is far enough right on the device that it is barely exposed through the opening in the plastic part that secures the top of the mini. Re: iPad in DA40
I've pre-ordered the RAM custom iPad mini cradle. Should get it next month. For now, just putting in my lap would work OK, as it's my Canadian approach plate device and a backup for the 795. This might change next year when my 795 subscriptions run out. We'll see.

Re: iPad in DA40
Here is my rig. I use an old faithful iPad1 3G running ForeFlight basic. After trying 3 different kneeboard type solutions I finally settled on the RAM Mount. I run a 10' charging cable (only available from Apple) from the charging port that runs behind the seats and along the sidewalls so it's not in the way at all, even for the rear seat pax. Like most of us, I have also accumulated a large collection of kneeboards and after talking to a friend who flies helicopters, thinking we have the same challenge as a rotary pilot with our center stick and their cyclic, I was turned on to the military standard APR MK9 helicopter pilot kneeboard. Note the CheckMate FlyWrite pad that fits perfectly on the kneeboard.

With the RAM "dash mount": http://www.sportys.com/Pilotshop/product/16676 (not attached to the glare shield cover that is attached to the canopy, but the fixed-in-position dash)Jean wrote:@Tyson
