G1000 Wind Speed and Direction
On the long cross country flights, paging around the G1000 I come up with questions.
When I first got the plane there was a place in the AUX pages (near where it told you what the density altitude was) that showed the wind direction and speed. This information is clearly KNOWN by the G1000. It displays it graphically and if even shows the headwind and crosswind components for the wind on the PFD.
It was great to have for PIREPs. I can no longer find it.
I just realized that I should be able to write a little script for the iPad to spit it out, since I know my heading and the two components, but does anyone know where it is now on those pages?

Re: G1000 Wind Speed and Direction
On our DA40 (sold) and DA42 (current), a wind vector with speed and direction (an arrow) displays on both the MAP page of the MFD (in the upper right corner of the map), and at the top of the small INSET map on the PFD.
And as you pointed out, you can also display the winds broken out into crosswind vs. direction-of-flight (i.e., headwind/tailwind) components on the PFD, displayed just to the upper left of the HSI.
Are you running a really old version of G1000 software?

Re: G1000 Wind Speed and Direction
Yes, I have that arrow. And the speed is there clearly in knots. But how can I read the arrow out to ATC when filing a PIREP? I used to be able to say the exact direction in compass degrees. Now I am making a guess.

Hi Colin -Colin wrote:But how can I read the arrow out to ATC when filing a PIREP?
I'm confused by your question.
If the wind data is set to "Option 2" (total wind direction and speed), the arrow is continuously aligned with the wind direction and directly adjacent to the giant HSI on the PFD. You won't get 1 degree precision (probably 5-10), but for the purposes of a PIREP it seems plenty accurate. Certainly better than any traditional approach to calculating wind speed and direction.
Or is there some issue that I'm missing?

Re: G1000 Wind Speed and Direction
Colin: just elaborating on Chris' answer as I am guessing that you were not aware of the capability:
The G1000 can display wind vectors in 3 different formats. Off the top of my head:
one is the actual wind vector (the arrow shows direction and the speed in knots is displayed).
another shows the wind speed split into two vectors (longitudinal and lateral)
and I forgot what the third one was.
You can select these by clicking the PFD button and then the WInd button from the programmable buttons at the bottom of the PFD.
This said, I have, on several occasions noticed that there is something wrong in the calculation of wind speed.
This was very obvious with strong winds (40 knots+) but I remember scratching my head on some other occasion.
I believe it is a software bug, but I ignored it because it is a "severity 3" in my eyes - cosmetic issue.

Re: G1000 Wind Speed and Direction
Third one is the combination of the two options, i.e. showing the wind vector and writing out the X-wind and head/tailwind speed components separately (see attachment).Antoine wrote: The G1000 can display wind vectors in 3 different formats. Off the top of my head:

Re: G1000 Wind Speed and Direction
And just for comparison, please see attached options 1 and 2. For a PIREP, I would think option 2 to be most appropriate as one can read the wind direction and speed off the wind box.

Re: G1000 Wind Speed and Direction
How do you read the wind direction on Option 2? I mean, you're guessing from the graphic of the arrow, right?

Re: G1000 Wind Speed and Direction
Yes, although "estimate" is probably better than "guess." Hence the comment about 5-10 degree accuracy. But with the arrow right next to the - extremely accurate - HSI it works well for me.Colin wrote:How do you read the wind direction on Option 2? Re: G1000 Wind Speed and Direction
I guess I will start using that method. I am disturbed that they have the data and don't display it for me anywhere.
