Aero Glass AR footage with DA-42
Fellow Diamond Aviators,
Please see the latest footage from Aero Glass, an Augmented Reality navigation solution using Smart Glasses, in our latest video as flown in a DA-42:
https://vimeo.com/210800728
The video contains footage of our technology in action with a camera put behind the smart glasses - just as a person would experience it.

Cool idea, but it's shaking too much. Makes me dizzy. It should connect to G1000.

thanks for the feedback.robert63 wrote:Cool idea, but it's shaking too much. Makes me dizzy. It should connect to G1000.
yes, the shake is still there as part of a development artifact. this is being ironed out as we speak. we'll be posting new footage as this is finalized.
we're also trying to talk with Garmin about connecting to the G1000 as it would simplify things, but they are not really open to opening up if you have contacts or know how to make this happen, I'd be grateful. so far we couldn't

Re: Aero Glass AR footage with DA-42
To connect to the G1000, consider how the FlightStream 510 wireless SDCard works with iPad apps like Foreflight and Garmin Pilot via Bluetooth. Unfortunately the 510 only works with the latest avionics like the G1000 NXi shipping in new planes. (There's the hardwired FlightStream 210 that could be wired to some other G1000s.)
But the G1000 normally writes about 60 parameters/second onto a standard SDCard inserted into the top MFD slot on WAAS-equipped DA40s and DA42s for flight data logging. If you put a wireless SDCard in there (readily available for the photography market), you might be able to make use of those parameters. Latency might be too big of an issue.

Re: Aero Glass AR footage with DA-42
thanks for the details. I contacted Garmin, let's see what they say. we've tried to contact them in the past, but they were really not open to 3rd party collaboration.
regarding the relaying the data log that is saved at 1Hz - nice idea, I didn't think of that, although a 1Hz data update frequency wouldn't be enough, unfortunately

What about data from a Stratus 2s instead? I flew an hour or so on the synthetic vision on my iPad with that. I assume you have more processing power than an iPad Mini.

unfortunately AHRSs like Stratus or iLevil don't provide the sufficent heading and attitude precision required for a Mixed Reality overlay to be sufficiently precise. see here for a demonstration:

as for Startus, it's only bound to ForeFlight as far as we know, thus 3rd parties can't connect to it. either way, these units are unfortunately not sufficiently precise, see above

Akos,
Actually I joined Aero Glass beta program 1-2 years ago. At that time EPSON Moverio AR glass was used and bit clumsy, but glad to see you've made a huge progress with ODG and the original head-tracking system. Keep it up!

Re: Aero Glass AR footage with DA-42
I can see this being a big distraction. What I would really like is something more like a HUD.
