Beringer brakes & tubeles tires on DA62

I am shortly finalizing my purchase order for a new DA62 (btw thanks CFIdave for help with the coloring, got it sorted!)

However, there are few thingies I am still contemplating and the factory seems to be a bit slow on responses. I hope fellows here could provide the information :)

1) I have read about tubeless tires. Are they worth it? Any positives / negatives compared to the stock ones with tubes that come with DA62?

2) I have enquired about Beringer brakes. I was told certification for DA62 is Q2/2021. Reading comments on the forum tells me that these would be worth the wait. Currently the plane would have delivery time April / May range from LOAN. So, extend the wait time a bit to get these brakes worth the wait?

3) The new scimitar propellers seem to be available to DA42. What I heard from the MT propellers they are also available for DA62 - but then I heard from my dealer that I should forget about them. I am a bit confused, do I have this option or not?

1. On the Diamond's DA50 video, tubeless tires are considered "low pressure." They're generally lighter in weight vs. using tubes. Cirrus has been using tubeless tires on SR22s for years. If available, I'd get them.

2. Great news about the Beringer brakes for the DA62 coming next year. If they're not too expensive, I may consider retrofitting them to my DA62 (I've had problems with brakes dragging with my DA62's current Cleveland brakes, causing excessive rotor wear). If it's only a month or so, I'd delay your new aircraft delivery to get the Beringer brakes. Just be aware that estimated certification times for the DA62 (with Diamond Canada holding the DA62 type certificate) may slip given Diamond's previous challenges obtaining Transport Canada approvals.

3. Are you sure there are new "scimitar" props for the DA42? Someone might simply be referring to the current DA42-VI MT props as "scimitar" -- compared to the previous skinnier blade props used on the DA42 TDI and DA42 NG models. As far as I know there are no new props available for the DA42-VI or DA62.

Yes, but aren't they the same 3-blade MT props that have been on the DA42-VI since 2012?

No.
OK, I'll bite: Since they look identical, what's the difference in blade length and width or other characteristics compared to the DA42-VI's MTV-6-R-C-F/CF190-69 props with 6' 3" (1900mm) diameter blades?
(For comparison, the DA62 MTV-6-R-C-F/CF194-80 props have 1" larger diameter 6' 4" (1940mm) blades.)

You probably saw the post in another thread about my experience with Beringer wheels, brakes and tubeless tires in a Cirrus. I thought they were superior and I made a pest of myself trying to get them on my new DA42. Alas, here is an email I received just today from Beringer;

"The STC-013.1 is for the DA42 only and the STC-013.2 is for the DA42 NG only.

The weight in our STC is limited to 1900KG for the NG and can not be moved. Our France HQ is working with Diamond on getting brakes for the higher weights but it is going to require a different brake and wheel and will change the STC so much that we will simply go for a new STC."


So why are they good?

For staters, look at them. They are beautiful pieces of mechanical art.

Many flats are related to the tubes. Less tubes, less flats.

They have a huge range of acceptable pressure. In the Cirrus the range for the nose tire was 40-90 psi, the mains 62-112. Because of the wide pressure range you don't have to check the tire pressure as often. So it drops 10 psi because you forgot to check it and cold weather moved in? If you started at the upper end of the range you're still good. Low pressure on a tube tire contributes to flats. A wider range of acceptable pressure means less flats.

Less rolling resistance. Two things here - the tires are stiffer and the wheels have different bearings. Instead of tapered bearings with lots of pressure on the axle nut, Beringers have sealed roller bearings with no tension. With the plane jacked up try to spin a regular wheel. It stops with barely a revolution. Give a Beringer a nudge and it spins and spins. This makes it easier to move the plane by hand. Not sure you do much hand pushing on a 62 though no matter what. :) Taxiing, the plane starts rolling sooner with less throttle. Here is a tricky thing, if parking on the slightest slope the plane may just start rolling across the ramp without you. First time I pulled the plane out of the hangar and unhooked the tow bar it just rolled away from me down the hangar ramp, across the active taxiway and towards the tie down area. Keep those chocks handy.

In the Cirrus they all say the Beringers stop better than the old style brakes, I never tried the old style there. The company talks about anti-skid technology. Not sure how or if that works. Sounds good though.

So they look better, roll better, stop better and fewer flats.

I would wait a month for them but not a year. Something to upgrade later.

Here's hoping they get an STC for the 1999 kg DA42s by the time I need new tires.

Mine are MTV-6-A-C-F/CF190-69 so I guess no difference :) except flange type (R vs A).

I put the brakes on my DA42. I wrote about it.

Totally worth it. I would not wait. I would just have it in the back of my mind that I was going to put them on when they became available in a year.

Fully agree with Colin. I had the factory standard brakes on my DA42TDI replaced two years ago with Beringer brakes and tubeless tires. The difference is very substantial. In my opinion worth the investment.
