DA50 base MSRP Guesstimate

I have been doing some research and calculations trying to come up with an estimated base MSRP for the new DA50 along with added features for items such as GCU 470 in the armrest, A/C, etc using a price list of the DA62, however,

With the following:
  • New engine selection (Continental CD-300 Diesel)
  • retractable gear
  • interior styling/components that appear to be very similar if not identical to the DA62
Do you think the base MRSP will be more than or less than that of a SR22 of $629,900 or even the SR22T of $729,900?

“Too much” is my guess.

My real guess is 700k.

I would guess the DA50 base MSRP will be more than the SR22T due to the retractable gear, greater interior space (a real 5-seater), and perhaps greater performance. You can also compare the DA50 to the $1.4M (fully equipped) DA62 with which it shares the same fuselage, gear, wings, tail, avionics, and interior cabin; the DA50 may out-perform the DA62.

So I would estimate more than $1M for a typical well-equipped DA50 with TKS, air conditioning, nice interior, etc. A fully-equipped SR22T is also now a million-dollar aircraft.

One possibility would be to take ratio of the price of the DA40NG to the DA42VII and multiple it against the price of the DA62. A quick search of the Diamond website did not reveal any prices, however.

Initial info I got was €850k which is roughly $1 mil. It should definitely outperform DA62 and my guess is that it would be able to reach 190 KTAS. I don't see usability of fixed gear version and I guess it's just transition phase to speed up certification.

I would very much like to see the DA50 succeed, but I am a bit worried that it may be over priced particularly if it out prices a DA62.

Cessna came out with the TTx which was supposed to compete with the SR22, in fact I believe it out performed the SR22 and the SR22T in speed, had a nice Garmin avionics, AC, blah blah blah..but never sold enough and so is no longer being made. It just did not appeal to the people looking for a higher performing airplane.

I just don't know that collapsible landing gear and a wider interior will do it for buyers who have very obviously fallen in love with every thing about the SR22 and not the TTx.

Why did the TTx fail, SR succeed and DA50 will succeed?

While the TTx is a nice plane, it had a lot less load capability than an SR22. About 3 years ago, I "demo'ed one". The demo pilot described it to me as a "comfortable and FAST (much "quicker" than a SR22) 2 1/2 seat plane"!! That's why it is no longer being made. Following that demo, I went on to look at the SR22 and finally decided on our DA62.

Cessna misspelled Corvallis, for one thing :) There were also production problems and delays introduced when they started moving production facilities around, notably to a plant in Mexico where local humidity screwed up the composite-cure process. The anti-icing e-vade system was also a big mistake. And full-fuel payload sucked.

Cessna is totally failing to be able to market anything that isn't one of their legacy cookie-cutters. Dropped the 162, the diesel 182 and 172, e.g.

Multiple reasons the SR22 greatly outsold Cessna's TTx (despite the TTx being a better performer):
1. SR22 has more space and useful load.
2. Cirrus is a marketing-driven company that knows how to sell much better than Cessna with piston aircraft.
3. SR22 as the "plane with the parachute" addresses nervous spouse/family concerns about pilot incapacitation. No parachute on the TTx.

Diamond will need to overcome 2 and 3 if it ever intends to make the DA50 a "Cirrus-killer."
