Re: AE 300: Timing Chain / Flywheel Replacement
My understanding that even for the Thielert/Continental engines they can be run past the TBR. There have been many planes with both the 1.7 and the 2.0 engines that operated under part 91 and have been run well past the TBR. In my discussions with the FAA/FSDO only the prop needs to be overhauled at the manufacturer's "requirement" even if run under part 91, but not the engines.

Re: AE 300: Timing Chain / Flywheel Replacement
Sure it’s annoying, but replacing both flywheels and timing chains will be €10k-€15k Euros and you get another 18 months flying. Overhauling the engines will cost €70k and you’ll have to join the queue and wait for an engine - there is a bit of a lead time right now for OH engines!
And if you’re flywheels are the older design, then definitely replace them.
I still query why a 600h flywheel check is being carried out at 1500h, they should be done at 600h and 1200h, then engine TBO at 1800h?

Re: AE 300: Timing Chain / Flywheel Replacement
For some owners 300 hours is a long time, so if you’re weighing the costs I assume you fly fairly often. Indeed, if you plan to replace the engines in the next 12 months, now is the time to order.
Replacing the chains and flywheels will keep you going until then. Since the flywheels are already off we’re just talking parts for those at a few grand a side. The timing chains themselves aren’t expensive it’s just the labor. Interesting, I’ve never had a chain fail the inspection.
