Actually, that isn't the oil drain, but the access plug for the oil sump screen (elephant filter). It should be checked at each oil change anyway. I hope you used a new copper/asbestos crush gasket, as they are good for a single tightening only (maybe thats why it seemed so loose?). The gasket has to be installed with the split toward the sump. Torque value is actually 135 degrees of turn past first contact of the sealing surfaces when tightening.

Steve,
I did find out after that that I can replace it with quick drain, next time I am aiming to do that, any recommendation for a safe quick drain ? Also how did you torque the oil filter, I had hard time to find a socket that will fit the small space between the firewall.
Thanks.

Ok, that makes sense. So is the drain the square one on the front pilot side? I didn't see any other place to drain the sump.

I seriously doubt as loose as it seemed that it was a normal condition. I could have tightened it harder with my fingers.

Any help on what size gasket I need to buy? Might as well buy several.

Thanks for the help.

Jeff.

On edit, saw your post on the previous page on the square plug. Any help n the crush washers would be great.

They do make a torque wrench that will fit, but I torque it just like my car oil filter - 3/4 turn after the lubricated rubber gasket contacts the adapter surface.

That's exactly how I did mine. That with the safety wire and I feel it's not going anywhere.

Yes.

Hence my supposition that the gasket had been reused...

It is an AN900-16 gasket, about $0.36 each from Aircraft Spruce.

Ended up buying a saf-air quick drain valve. I'll install next oil change.

Nice thread - maybe I'll try too. I suggest the next person who does it makes a video.

What about cutting the filter open to check for metal residues and having the oil analyzed.
Are these not required at 50 hours?

I don't think it is required by FAR but it is certainly good practice. I also do oil analysis with Blackstone Labs at every oil change.
