G1000 - Red X Madness

Post by Gnomad »

Hey guys...

Thought you might want to see a short video of the problems that appeared on my G1000 last week. Started a thread a few weeks ago asking how to simulate G1000 failures, should have knocked on wood I guess.

Pretty much anything that has to do with engine monitoring is X-ing out, then coming back, then X again over and over. Engine softkey shows all red X's except for the totalizer. Aux page shows all green checks and the upon loading up the flight data, here on DAN, everything looks perfectly normal. Had expected to see dropouts on the graph, but nothing abnormal. Talked with Diamond, Premiere and some Garmin shops in the NC/SC area today, nobody seems to have seen this before!

Anyway, off to Dillon's Aviation first thing in the AM Tuesday. Hoping it's some sort of loose connection, as some have suggested, and not the GEA71 or something else serious.

Anyway, have a look...load it in HD on full screen for best viewing of the MFD.

p.s. oh and I did upload a couple pics to the DAN gallery over the weekend

Hi,

Not seen your issue but have just been looking at lot at the GEA 71 a lot (due to fuel pressure issue) and there are a few large connectors going to the GEA 71 - my first suspicion on this would be simply a loose connector (one of the chunky connectors). They need clipping in; shouldn't come loose but ..

These same chunky clip-in connectors are used on the GDC74, and the problem I found a few years ago was that one of the pins was not fully-seated in the connector and was intermittent, which was causing intermittent red X's on some of the PFD items. Eric, hopefully your issue will turn out to be something simple like that, too!

Well no luck with the connectors, they all seemed fine. Reseated and test flown and problem still exists. New GEA 71 coming from Garmin in a couple days, had to hitch a ride back home. Actually they had to deliver a plane to Fayetteville, so they let me fly a 2005 DA40 from the flight school, then continue on to Charlotte with the other pilot. First time I had seen the KAP 140 AP so that was interesting. Line guys at home base teased me when we pulled up to the FBO. Something about now being a real aircraft owner after having to leave my plane behind for more work. *sigh* ;)

Eric,
Please excuse my ignorance as you may have already tried this. Did you remove and reseat your old GEA71 to make sure that the connections on the LRU BUS are all good? If this is the problem it would be a lot cheaper than purchasing a new GEA71.

Not sure if they did this or not yesterday. Mechanic/tech
spent a lot of time on phone with Garmin and Diamond
yesterday so I'm guessing yes. I'm under warranty, it's
a 2012 XLS so no worries there. Just bummed since I had
To cancel all my IR lessons this week. Hopefully the new 71
fixes the issue.

Ahh, warranty. Sure makes life easier (at least on the pocketbook).

Well good news! The GEA71 was replaced
yesterday and seems to have fixed the
problem. 2 hours flight time and no red Xs
at all, so my fingers are crossed. Now if only
the hurricane would please leave! ;)

Just joined the club. :(

It started in flight: lost Com1 and Nav 1. It recovered after maybe 30 seconds
Then it would occur randomly and I would also lose Heading and AFCS.
Yesterday it occured before startup and everything was Xed red.
It went away after I started the alternator.
My battery is new.
Nav and com2 are not affected.
Could this be a connector? Or what do you think?
