This is quite vague... Does anyone have the actual instructions / documents associated with this Service Bulletin? I can't figure out where to get them from on Diamond's website (if they are there at all).

I'm looking for them. In the meantime I found the temporary revision of the maintenance manual for the Orion 600 anti collision lights.

Hi Phil -

This vague OSB obliquely references two other documents with actual content... ;)
  1. Changes to the AMM: MÄM 40-635 - link
This has a drawing with adjustment instructions, but nothing about the wiring.
  2. Changes to the AFM: OÄM 40-362 - link
This lists the specific LED part numbers.

FWIW, there are newer LEDs which are considerably brighter, but these require a 337...

If you are looking for the Work Instructions ((WI-OSB 40-077), they are typically not published on the website. You may have to request them from Diamond and they are not always willing to provide them to someone other than a Diamond Service Center, at least in North America. My suggestion would be to reach out to Tech Support in Ontario and ask.

Perfect!

Yes, these LEDs will be considerably brighter and also better focused. However I think that new brackets will be required to fit them.

Hi Gilman -

LEDs using Cree's latest chips are just amazingly bright. AeroLEDs Sunbeam LEDs (datasheet) fit in the DA40 wing, but the mounting is much different than the OEM incandescent lamps.

I have submitted a 337 to change from the OEM HIDs to Sunbeam LEDs (separate post forthcoming if this gets approved). Here is a comparison photo taken with fixed f-stop and shutter speed, with the LEDs mounted in a fixture directly above the HIDs. Note that the OEM landing and taxi HIDs are the same lamp, simply with offset angles. AeroLEDs supplies a Fresnel lens for the taxi light to widen the beam horizontally, which significantly improves peripheral visibility.

IMO the illumination is comparable, but draw your own conclusions:

The pair of LEDs draws <1A @ 28V, and can flash (for daytime recognition) using the existing wiring.

Chris this is great. I see the Sunbeam weighs 8 oz. or 227 grams.
Do we know how much more the HID system weighs?

Not yet. ;)

The strobe ballasts weigh ~2lbs each, but the HID ballasts look smaller. Of course, they could be solid iron & copper...

I installed the HID system about 5 years ago. I will check my maintenance logs when I get home for the weight. My recollection was that they were about 1.5 pounds heavier than the standard incandescent installation.

Steve

**Just checked. Actually, the HIDs are 2.4 pounds heavier.**
