If diamond issues an osb, doesn't that mean if you do it that it won't impact your certification.

Actually, for Part 91 operators, no Service Bulletins are "Mandatory", whether Optional, Recommended, or even the Mandatory ones. Only ADs.

That being said, if you perform a SB, you must do it according to the published procedure. You can't just "wing it"...

The lower part of that tube provides the grounding of the nav light frame to the airframe and the grounding of the wingtip proper (and thus the discharge wires).

The latter is via its design where it fits between the wingtip and the lower skin. Methinks that with this part removed the physical connection right there would be subject to some stress that could cause cracking in the skin.

Fully agree with Rich. This is why I made sure the tip of the tube was not left to vibrate freely.
I was also concerned that such vibration could play a role in the flutter behavior...

... and I still think Diamond should update the OSB to address this matter.

I'm getting ready to make the switch to the Orion 600 LED wingtip lights during my annual next month. The good news is that Diamond now has a special bracket for connecting the lightning protection tube to the Orion fixture. The bad news is they run about $100 USD each! :shock: But I'm posting this in case anyone else makes this conversion down the road and wants the "standard Diamond part".

$100 each = 1 "Airplane Dollar" per side.

Inexpensive for a certificated plane!

It is indeed great news that DAI acknowledged the issue and made this part. I would not skimp on the $ 200.

Funny that it took exactly two years from reporting the issue to this solution being publicized. If $ 100 is one aviation dollar then 2 years must be an aviation week end !:D

I've never heard of a $100 "Airplane Dollar" before.

The usual term is an AMU (Aircraft Maintenance Unit) = $1000 USD.

So the LED bracket is only 1/10 of an AMU: What a bargain! :D

Fun stuff. It would be interesting to come up with an empirical coefficient representing the unaccounted for externalities and economic costs of regulation in aviation.

We could start by creating a representative marketplace basket of parts for aviation and a second basket for comparable parts sold in less highly regulated sectors. While there is some debate about why the less regulated parts are superior (last longer, break less often, are more functionally advanced, cost much less, etc.), I don't think there is much debate about their superiority. So, the apples to apples comparisons will be pithy Red Delicious to crisp Granny Smith. Even so . . .

AMUSEP = $ 1000
AMUMEP = $1500
AMUSET = $2000
AMUEUR = €5000
Notice something fishy here?
