Oil Pressure Gauge Problem

Post by Tom Davis »

Last weekend I was flying and suddenly the oil pressure gauge went to zero or nearly zero. It flopped around in the red and low yellow. I immediately started to land and the thing suddenly registered normal. I landed and there was plenty of oil in the plane. I started it back up and took the plane to a mechanic. He checked a connection and found nothing wrong. I have a G1000 so I guess I need an avionics shop to look deeper into the matter. Later in the week, I started the plane up and the oil gauge did the same thing, but jumped to normal pretty quickly. The CHT stays normal.

I am supposed to fly the plane to a place with an avionics shop later this week. Does anyone here have any suggestion as to what I should tell the guys there to look for first?

Thanks.

Tom, the oil pressure transducer and the fuel pressure transducer are the same part number, so the typical suggestion here is to swap those two sensors and see if the problem stays, moves, or goes away completely.

Tom, the exact same thing happened to me a few years ago, for 3 flights I noticed it. First it blipped so fast I thought I imagined it, then on the third flight, it dropped to the yellow for a bit, so I turned around and landed. I pulled the transducer connection, sprayed some contact cleaner on it, and it's been perfect ever since. You can see where it is in the maintenance manual, it just push/twists apart.

Just had this issue myself. Started up the engine and oil pressure was low then zero. Contact cleaner on the transducer connection and it's been fine since. This post was very helpful, thanks.

What engine do you have ?

I know of an Austro that had intermittent oil pressure. Turned out to be a problem in the sump.
