Rich,
I rationalize that age is a state of mind, and my DA40 is a time machine that transforms me into a young man when I'm flying. (I just spoke today with a forum member who began his flying lessons two years ago, at the age of 65.)

I absolutely agree, Joe. I'm 70 and most folks think I'm in my 50's. Because I "Always look on the bright side of life"lathamwj wrote:Rich,

I was 61 when I learned to fly (er . . . to whatever extent I can actually fly).

Re: Garmin G-1000 ADS-B solution?
$11k is little steep for a G1000 install unless it's a single Cessnas with G1000; they're probably the most expensive. If you want the latest .35 software that makes the GIA63W's a usable position source they charge you about $1200 just for the software. If you just want to update the GTX33 XPDR to a 33ES for just 1090 out, purchase their unlock card for $1K or whatever and depending on the dash number of the 33 XPDR they may not even upgrade it and want you to buy another one from them!+++The last 172 I did was cheaper to install a 345R with ADS-B 1090 In/Out, UAT in, than go with Cessna's upgrade for a 33ES.
A GTX 345R in a G1000 equipped DA40 though I would estimate the $8.5-9k range.
Make sure you are comparing apples to apples when pricing your ADS-B ie 1090ES out only, In/Out, UAT etc. A Garmin 345 lists for $5k ($6K with GPS) so it would be hard to install this with a GNSW for $5k or in a 150/172 for $4k-4.5K!
Cheers,
Kris

Re: Garmin G-1000 ADS-B solution?
Some validity (out vs. in/out), but the deal is you have different practical choices for hardware. The Appareo is probably the sweet spot for a legacy aircraft that lacks WAAS. Actual installed prices for the "out" version is running around $4500. The in/out, installed, is around $5K. With the rebate, then, around $4K-4.5K. I had a KT74 installed in my GNS DA40 for $5K. Again, "out" only. I adopted too early to get the rebate.kelson73 wrote: Make sure you are comparing apples to apples when pricing your ADS-B ie 1090ES out only, In/Out, UAT etc. A Garmin 345 lists for $5k ($6K with GPS) so it would be hard to install this with a GNSW for $5k or in a 150/172 for $4k-4.5K!

I see Aircraft Spruce is listing the KT74 for $2500. A GNSxxxW aircraft with certain older King transponders might get the "out" handled for 3K-3.5K.

Re: Garmin G-1000 ADS-B solution?
For what its worth. I was curious to see if anything had changed with Diamond. I called their service number and a "representative" told me that they are moving in the direction of software upgrades to simplify the ADS-B installation and to take advantage of some other G1000 upgrade features. This is mostly for the WAAS G1000 systems. He could not or would not tell me any time frames, but assured me that this would be coming. I"m fairly optimistic, or maybe gullible, but I'm going to wait another year or so before I upgrade to ADS-B. The possible money I save will outweigh the current rebate, if less equipment is required. IF any of you call Diamond, please let me know if you hear different.

Thanks for doing this Curt. It was on my list of things to get around to. For those of us with WAAS, I'm still hoping that it is a GTX 345R and the next software upgrade.

Re: Garmin G-1000 ADS-B solution?
I had contacted Garmin regarding the GTX 345R WAAS issue. They had sent me the following statement:
So summarized: All Diamond planes with GPU software < 14 require GTX 345R PLUS WAAS, as the info from the GIA63W cannot be sent to the GTX.

Re: Garmin G-1000 ADS-B solution?
Greetings Everyone!
I have been a long time "lurker" benefiting from the information here. I believe this is my first post on this forum so please excuse any errors this may include.
I purchased N64SU 2 years ago. It is a 2008 Diamond DA-40 XLT Serial# 40.994 with the G1000 with WAAS system software version 321.22. I have been following along hoping for an update on the current situation that would allow me to use the non-GPS equipped GXT345R and forgo the additional antenna installation.
I was told last year that my only option to meet the ADSB mandate with my G1000-WAAS system was to purchase the Garmin GTX 345R with GPS with an additional antenna installation which would push the cost of the installation to over $7000.
I contacted Diamond a last week to see it things had changed. The disappointing response from the Diamond Technical Services Specialist is below.
************************************************************
The G1000 is currently a STC installation on the DA40. We are in the process of having it transferred to our type certificate where we can make changes such as a software update here at Diamond. At this present time, I do not have a known date as to when the transfer will be approved or when we can expect to produce an update. Feel free to check back with us at a later date for any changes.
As mentioned above for owners of the 2008 era DA40’s, we are looking to have this STC transferred to our type certificate. Until then, an additional antenna will have to be installed. We do have provisions for the mounting of the antenna. Have your avionics shop contact us and we would be more than happy to provide them with the instructions.
******************************************************
I'm very disappointed in Diamond's response. At this point I'm still holding out to see if something changes before 2019.
Take care all,
Stephen

Re: Garmin G-1000 ADS-B solution?
I am now looking at the new G D L 82 for my DA 42.It is a relativity simple install , in line hook up to the transponder. one ant. and a power line. Equipment cost is under $2000 plus install.
