Dave,

Do you know if sharing the existing GDL69A antenna can be accomplished with a passive 'Y' connection or are there signal strength issues?

I need to be more careful in my wording -- earlier in this thread Diamond mentioned sharing a single internal antenna for the GDL69A and GTX345 GPS but it's not re-use of the GDL69A's original antenna -- it's a dual-purpose GA37 antenna mounted internally.

Dave, I was told by John Armstrong that all new DA40-XLT's shipping from the factory would have ADS-B in and out. Any idea how this is being accomplished?

Diamond's ADS-B announcement back in February:
“We are very pleased to offer GARMIN’s new GTX-345 series NextGen Transponders with ADS-B IN / OUT as
standard equipment on all our new aircraft for sale in the US”, said Peter Maurer, President and CEO of Diamond
Aircraft Industries Inc. (Canada).
Also from Diamond's February announcement:
Diamond’s Lycoming IO360 powered 2016 DA40XLT is equipped with a long list of standard features and equipment that now also includes GARMIN’s Electronic Stability & Protection System and GARMIN’s new ADS-B In/Out and Mode S GTX-345R Transponder.

Hello fellow aviators, my DA40 is non WAAS, 2005 YM, I have the latest software available for it.
I'm contemplating getting the Garmin 345R and the Flightstream 210 (possibly) the question I have for the members that have done it is whether you get the ADS-B Weather and Traffic on the MFD.
I saw that Kyle has it but he has the WAAS upgrade.
Will the non WAAS aircraft get Weather & Traffic on the MFD
Was the installation done by installing a internal or external antenna, please help us by stating the make & part number
Does the Bluetooth on the G345R work and to what extent
Has anyone installed Flightstream 210, what does it work with (Foreflight, Garmin Pilot)
What was the labor hit in hours and total AMU's

Thank you all, hopefully my confusion will dissipate, someone said "the more things change, the more they stay the same, or worse"

As far as I know, weather will be essentially unavailable in Canada and traffic you would see would presumably be limited to only other ADS-B out equipped aircraft. This is because weather and non ADS-B traffic reporting is limited to that transmitted by 978 UAT transmissions from ground-based towers. These are only deployed in the US. I have heard of no plans to roll these out anywhere else in the world. So if you're flying near the US border you might pick up some stuff, but that'd be it.

CFIDave's answer to Stephen's question about new aircraft being equipped with the Garmin 345R was THAT they would be so equipped but not HOW they made it work--aren't they stuck with the some software issues that the rest of us with WAAS are faced? Perhaps they they used the non-WAAS G1000 and the WAAS-GTX345R? This approach would make more sense starting from scratch and be less costly.

Hi Eric -

The correct (new) software exists, and Diamond is presumably using the WAAS G1000 with the non-WAAS GTX345R for new XLTs. The issue for older WAAS airframes is that someone (Garmin & /or Diamond) needs to create, *certify* and document an update tool that deals with down-revision software/hardware combinations. This is not technically difficult, but presumably is tedious and time consuming.

Below is an email exchange with Diamond and Garmin.

Mr. Stein,

The G1000 installed in the DA40-180 in installed under Garmin’s STC, not as part of the Diamond TC. At some point we will likely incorporate it’s installation under our design approval, but I cannot comment when. At some point new software will be released and available, but I cannot comment when. Regards.

Mr. Hawkes,
Please read the statement from Garmin below and let me know what is the next move???? Will Diamond certify the upgrade anytime soon?

Sincerely,

Hi Curt,

Once Diamond has certified GDU v. 13.00 and GIA 63W v.7.00 and higher then we will update our GTX 3x5 Part 23 AML STC. The following software versions are currently covered under the AML STC:

Please let me know if you have any questions.

I was contacted by “Mark” in your updates dept. last night regarding this. If a software change is to be made to the G1000 in a Diamond DA40, is it Garmin’s or Diamond’s responsibility to issue the STC for the change? In the email below, Diamond is saying that it’s up to Garmin to make the STC for the software upgrade to existing G1000 panels in Diamond aircraft. Is this true or is not?

Many of us Diamond owners are looking for a seamless upgrade to comply with the ADS-B mandate. I was told that with the more current software for the G1000 system components, this was possible and would only need a replacement GTX-345R to do it, as long as the Diamond has the WAAS GIA’s. Performing the upgrade would allow many other features of the G1000 to be used and taken advantage of by the Diamond owners.

Who is telling the truth and who needs to make the changes for this?

Sincerely,
Curt Stein

Mr. Stein,

The G1000 in the DA40-180 is currently installed under Garmin’s STC, not Diamond’s. Yes future software revisions will be available, however I cannot say when with any accuracy. I would think at least a year before we see any new software, but quite frankly, this is my personal guess and is not reflective of an official Diamond/Garmin timeline. Regards.

Mr Hawkes,
Diamond has the power to make the necessary changes to upgrade all the software to make the ADS-B transition easier, less expensive, and better for all the owners. The STC has to be done by Diamond, with Garmin’s assistance. Garmin told me they can do it. Upgrading the software versions to the system will also improve several functions available to Diamond owners. Does Diamond have this in their plans for the foreseeable future? If so, when?

Mr. Stein,

Any new aircraft built with the ADSB option will have it installed in the same manner as described below. There is no difference in the installation between new and what is available for the field. Regards.

I have one, what would seem simple, question. Why are the new XLT’s coming with ADS-B in and out, but the older XLS’s can’t have the same functionality? The basic equipment is the same, plus the new model transponder. The only thing needed is software changes.

Why would Diamond not be concerned with the issues and concerns of current owners and future purchasers of used airplanes? If you want to retain customers and promote future sales, new and used, you need to take care of all Diamond customers. Helping everyone with simpler transitions and keeping up with technology is one of those important goals. I’m reading the Diamond forum and there seems to be some discontent with your approach to this.

Just my two cents.

Sincerely,
Curt Stein

Subject: RE: software update

Mr. Stein,

The attached Garmin STC is available for ADSB installation into the DA40 aircraft. This STC can be purchased through a Garmin Dealer or by a certified avionics shop, who has access to the applicable manuals from Garmin. For ADSB to work seamlessly with the G1000, the PFD/MFD software must be 13.00 and the GIA software must be 7.00 minimum.

For the DA40-180, the highest software 321.22 (Non WAAS) the PFD/MFD are 9.05 and GIAs are 5.82. If currently equipped with WAAS and 321.23 software, MFD/PFD are 12.05 and GIAs are 6.40. These software levels do not provide seamless ADSB operation in the G1000 because the PFD/MFD/GIA software is too low. So, for ADSB out only, WAAS or non WAAS DA40, a GTX335R with built in GPS receiver is required. A standalone WAAS antenna, separate from the two aircraft GPS antennas, must be installed for the GTX to use. For ADSB in and out, a GTX345R with built in GPS receiver is installed, along with the same standalone WAAS antenna.

Currently we are recommending the additional antenna be installed where the GDL69 installation antenna would mount. A 337 would probably have to be submitted as we do not have a Diamond ADSB provisional requirements service bulletin for this. If the aircraft currently has GDL69, the antenna is removed and replaced with a dual purpose GDL69/WAAS antenna.

Good afternoon,
I have another inquiry. What is the current option for someone to comply with the ADS-B requirements? I have a Diamond DA40, serial number 40.1123. I would like to have both traffic and weather available in my plane, without paying for XM services. Is this possible?

Sincerely,
Curt Stein
