Approximately 350 HP for 30 minutes. I wonder if an on-board APU to recharge batteries would be feasible.

Yes, and at Airventure, Pipestrel gave a talk on their hybrid system, which uses a Rotax 912s for the internal combution engine. Pipistrel is far ahead of anyone else in this area, and have designed the instrumentation, computer systems, and redundancy needed for this new venture. Note that they provided the battery power system for this Siemens plane. A hybrid of this power has not been yet completed as far as I know, but most of this information is proprietary, and thus not easily researched.

More progress. With our wing structures and aerodynamic efficiency, I would love to see this system in a DA40.

Re: Impressive step forward in electric power
My wife's daily driver is a Tesla and I sometimes drive a little Tesla roadster on nice sunny days. That said, I am a true believer of electric propulsion with it's high torque, non-vibration and quietness. As mentioned in an other tread posted earlier, by the time they have batteries perfected for longer flight duration, I may be too old to fly. I wish this technology
was 20 years more advanced than it is today as I would definitely convert to an electric plane.
