Looking for ideas

Post by Rich »

My glare shield has accumulated some pretty ugly glue-glob sections where velcro was stuck to mount this or that device. In fact I've still got a couple of small discs stuck to it from, I believe, the Bush administration. Has anyone had any success removing this goop from this surface? The surface itself is still OK, but I'm afraid the wrong solvent would screw it up completely forcing me to consider putting shag carpet or something over it (laugh not - I've seen planes like this  ).

I'm going to use Isopropynol on mine when I clean it up. Should be safe.

No experience with the glare shield in particular, but I've had good success with Stoddard solvent (non-flammable) and lighter fluid (obviously flammable) removing stick-on residue without damaging the underlying surface. Test in an out-of-the-way spot.

"Goof-Off," acetone or MEK also work, but IME usually removes finish.

WD40 works great for a lot of types of glue and can be easily cleaned up afterwards.

It also works for water stains in your shower.
