What is crazy with this autopilot issue is that, if I understand the g1000 architecture correctly, we all already have :
- a GFC700 computer (as it is the GIA63 units)
- the GFC700 software part of the G1000 software, and I assume, the right to use it (as there is no unlock card for the GFC700)
- by construction, the interface with the G1000

So we only need the 3 or 4 servos, the control panel and the paperwork.

If Diamond isn’t willing to provide that a reasonable price, shouldn’t we go to another organisation and push for à development of an STC for the upgrade ?

It seems much more straightforward that certifying a completely new autopilot on the airframe, developing the G1000 interface etc...

Or am i missing something ?

plus the certification costs? maybe flight testing required?

A problem with assuming that Garmin has been totally cooperative and that all upgrade issues should be blamed on Diamond is that I have had first hand experience with Garmin’s outright refusal to test and overhaul/update GIA63Ws that I purchased, despite my expressed willingness to pay for Garmin’s services. I have owned aircraft since 1984, and, never before has any manufacturer, including King, Narco, and others, taken the position that Garmin took.

Maybe, at least part of the thrust of this initiative should be to encourage Diamond to seriously explore partnering with other manufacturers, including King-Bendix and Dynon, so that Garmin takes a more customer-centric, rather than monopolistic, approach.

mooney has gotten the stec 55x to work with their g1000 aircrafts, so I am hoping diamond would do the same and work with garmin/other manufacture if the gfc 700 is not economically feasible.

AFAIK DAI is not interested in having another autopilot in G1000 equipped aircrafts.

The problem is why does DAI control what's in your airplane, when most other aircraft owners are free to decide what to put in their airplane? Why does DAI grant Garmin a monopoly on Diamond aircraft, to the detriment of their owners?

I understand what's in that for Garmin. I don't understand what's in that for DAI.

My other plane (a 2004 C172S) has been upgraded to G5s/GTNs/GFC500 - it flies AP-coupled VNAV and LPVs to minimums and, after pressing TOGA, the full missed approach on AP. Its avionics are like an iPad Pro compared to a MS Pocket PC in my otherwise much more sophisticated 2006 DA42 X/C crunching machine.
Pretty bizarre.

The Diamond survey has been posted, and is available starting today - but only through May 18th. So... everyone reading this needs to go fill it out, and encourage any other Diamond owners they know to also fill it out!

The survey is here and the article about the survey is here.

There is not much meat in this "round one" survey. It feels more like an attempt for Diamond to build an existing customer list, something they should have done a long time ago! But... hopefully it will lead to the asking of more relevant questions in the near future concerning upgrade paths, etc.

Thanks, Rick, for posting the Diamond website link. A few of us had a relatively short teleconference meeting this morning and decided to start a brand-new thread regarding this breaking news from Diamond and you beat us to it. Yet, the duplication of this important link can only help get the word out far and wide.
