Here’s a little more news on the proposed meeting with both Diamond and Garmin, as we heard last week from CEO Scott McFadzean, setting the date for these meeting to be held in the first week of March. While it’s not entirely clear at this point, the indication is these meetings will take place in Olathe, Kansas.

The owner's representatives working group was established by TwinStarScott in the fall of 2018 when he began collecting signatures on the original G1000 petition. Beginning in the spring of 2019 the working group grew to include CFIDave, enemic99, colin, Boatguy and chili4way. That group has been working together and exchanging communications with DAI as documented in this topic.

The meeting to which TwinStarScott referred will be the culmination of about 18 months of effort and is intended to be both bilaterally informative and collaborative. We hope to replace some of the speculation on DAN with facts and first hand communication, while unambiguously expressing the owner's concerns and perspectives on a broad set of issues. Collaborative in that we hope to influence the policies and practices at both Diamond and Garmin by working with them to propose and evaluate solutions.

We anticipate meeting with Diamond and Garmin in March, though the dates, location and attendees from Diamond and Garmin are not yet confirmed. Once those logistics are confirmed we will know who among the owner's representatives group is able to attend. We expect to be able to post within the next week the full agenda we are proposing.

As a (very) long time pilot, engineer, attorney, and owner of an affected non-WAAS 2005 DA40 who personally knows many in the Diamond organization, and who has been denied service by Garmin, despite my willingness to pay, I would, very much, like to attend such a meeting.

I want to thank all owners who will participate in the meeting with Diamond for their effort and support for all of us.
May I ask to add the situation of the DA40 TDI owners to the agenda? As mentioned before, the GDU software available from Diamond is stuck at version 5.02.

We're asking that all legacy G1000's be brought up to GDU 15 so that's where the discussion will start.

Looks like a great agenda. Kudos to whomever put it together -- clearly a lot of work.

A few comments/questions:

1. The agenda dances around a crucial unsaid issue: Diamond and Garmin haven't delivered software in years. What's happened? They used to be fairly good at this, but clearly it has gone off the rails. In a world increasingly focused on software, Diamond seems to be very out of tune. Did they lose the internal talent? Someone have a fight with Garmin?

2. Along the same lines, we need Diamond to commit to a regular software update. If Tesla can produce updates every two weeks then Garmin/Diamond can produce new versions every year ... at least. The safety of flight argument is clearly specious. Cirrus is updating software continuously.

3. There is a comment that we're not experts. It is a nice line, but not quite true. There are numerous folks here who are quite knowledgeable.

4. Finally, I think you can mention the big implication of this whole thing. I am, for example, thinking of leaving Diamond given the issues raised on this board. It would only take a few people before the product line collapses. They don't want this to become a big deal. Aviation is too small, too precarious, etc.

Yes, indeed Peter! And without a doubt, one DAN member deserves special mention, and that would be "Boatguy". Early last year he generously gave this now long running project a much-needed shot in the arm - when he began lending his skills and expertise. In fact, if it weren't for his substantial* and strategic contributions to the G1000 project, these March meetings with both DAI and Garmin (and at Garmin headquarters no less) would not be taking place next month, if ever.

While I’m also sure Boatguy will find this post quite embarrassing, every Diamond owner (especially those with a G1000 panel) stands to benefit from his countless hours of hard work and dedication. Granted this is a team effort, yet every team has at least one superstar and to me they’re all superstars in their own unique ways. Bottomline is we, as DAN members, are fortunate to have cobbled together such an experienced, talented and diverse group.

On that note, speaking with Garmin’s OEM manager last Friday - from their perspective we have gathered the ideal number owners for the March meetings. Yet all DAN members need to please keep in mind that these annual meetings (per DAI) will continue indefinitely and the composition of the owners’ group will certainly change over time.

* which goes well beyond him spearheading this single agenda. Boatguy also suggested the app "Slack" and established an account there for our benefit, which we have all found to be a great collaborative tool for items such as this meeting agenda.
